IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Map illustrates access to a city hospital through road over 2 periods of time 2007 and 2010.
In 2010, three different road routes were mentioned which can grant you direct excess to city hospital. One is straight from south to hospital road with the second is from west but after reaching in middle you have to take left turn to enter hospital road, while third is from eastern side in which you have to take right turn from middle to enter hospital road. Apart from that there is a ring road shown across hospital in square form, as well as parking space for staff at the main hospital road entrance towards south east.
2010 witnessed lot of changes in infrastructure like public parking space was built towards east while employee parking space remained at south east. In addition bus stand was also built at west south. Furthermore round about was also built at the entrance of hospital as well as hospital road from different directions . Ring road still remained around the hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify several genuine changes, including the new public car park, the staff car park, the bus station and the roundabouts. However, the description is only partially accurate and does not clearly summarise the main transformation. The 2010 map has two roundabouts—at the Ring Road and City Road junctions—not roundabouts at the hospital entrance or at “different directions.” The bus station is west of Hospital Road, but “west south” is imprecise, and the account of three routes and turning left or right is not clearly supported by the maps. You also omit that the individual bus stops were removed and that the public car park has direct access from Ring Road. Give a concise overview, then compare the key changes accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has some organisation: it introduces the two dates, describes the 2010 layout, and then lists changes using links such as “Apart from that,” “In addition,” and “Furthermore.” This gives the reader a basic sense of sequence. However, there is no clear overall progression from an overview of the main changes to well-grouped details. The first paragraph focuses on routes and the second repeats some of the same 2010 features, while the 2007 layout receives little structured comparison. Some linking phrases feel mechanical, and references such as “the entrance” and “different directions” are unclear. Organise the response into an overview followed by separate, logically ordered comparisons of roads, parking and bus facilities.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “Ring Road,” “parking space,” “infrastructure,” and “round about,” and the reader can generally identify the features you mean. There is some variety in how you describe change, for example “was built” and “remained.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task: “direct excess” appears to mean access, “three different road routes were mentioned” is not an appropriate way to describe a map, and “bus stand” is less precise than the label “bus station.” “Employee parking space” also differs from the map’s “staff car park.” Use precise location and transport terms, and check spelling and collocations so that vocabulary supports accurate comparisons.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a sentence beginning “In 2010” and a contrast introduced by “while.” Some basic meaning is conveyed, but errors are frequent and several sentences are difficult to follow. For example, “Map illustrates access … through road over 2 periods” lacks an article and has an unclear structure, while “One is straight from south to hospital road” has missing articles and awkward prepositions. The long sentence describing the three routes also combines several clauses without clear grammatical control. There are punctuation and spacing problems, including the space before the full stop in “directions .” Build clearer sentences with accurate articles and prepositions, and use shorter clauses when describing locations.
