IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Both maps display the major changes happened in the surroundings of a city hospital over a gap of 3 years.
To begin with, a new car parking for public was constructed in the right side of the city hospital. There was a roundabout constructed in the front of the hospital which was extended to the hospital road. It was seen that bus stops situated on either sides of the hospital road were demolished. The major notable addition was a bus station built in the left side of hospital road. Additionally, the bus stops in the right side of the hospital are removed and staff car park was renovated. Furthermore, the hospital road again continued to reach another roundabout which divided into three different roads named city road. The two roundabouts are connected to the bus station situated in the left side of the hospital road. Moreover, there exist two small paths from public cark park and staff car park connected to the ring road surrounding city hospital.
To sum up, there were considerable changes took place in the road map of city hospital which were helpful for the people to easily access the hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important changes, including the new public car park, the bus station, the removal of the bus stops, and the two roundabouts. These details are broadly consistent with the maps, and the response gives a general sense that access was reorganised. However, the overview is vague: “considerable changes” does not clearly summarise the main transformation, such as replacing the roadside bus stops with a bus station and separating staff and public parking. Some details are unclear or inaccurate. The northern roundabout is at the junction of Hospital Road and Ring Road, rather than “in front of the hospital,” and the public car park is accessed from Ring Road, not by a path from both car parks. State the main changes precisely and distinguish the two parking areas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has an identifiable opening, a sequence of change descriptions, and a concluding sentence, so the reader can follow its general subject. You also use linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “Additionally,” and “Furthermore.” However, the body is presented as one long paragraph, and the sequence sometimes becomes repetitive or difficult to track. For example, the removal of bus stops is mentioned twice, while “the two roundabouts are connected to the bus station” is not clearly explained. The final “To sum up” repeats the general idea rather than providing a focused overview. Organise the report into a clear overview and grouped details, and use references such as “the northern roundabout” and “the former shared car park” to make relationships explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing map changes, including “constructed,” “demolished,” “addition,” and “surrounding.” These choices help communicate the main developments, and the reader can generally understand the locations being compared. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “car parking for public,” “in the right side,” and “staff car park was renovated” do not describe the map changes naturally. “Renovated” also suggests refurbishment, whereas the map shows the existing car park being designated for staff. There is a spelling error in “cark park,” and “small paths” is not a precise description of the road access shown. Use standard map-reporting phrases such as “a public car park was added” and “the existing car park became staff-only.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning “which” and “that,” and most of the intended meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “the major changes happened” would be more accurately expressed as “the major changes that took place,” while “There was a roundabout constructed” is an awkward passive construction. In “there were considerable changes took place,” the two verb patterns are incorrectly combined. There are also errors in “on either sides” and “in the right side.” Practise forming accurate passive sentences and use consistent past-tense descriptions, while checking articles and plural forms. More error-free complex sentences would make the report clearer.
