IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In 2007 there was a bus stop along the hosital but after three years it turned into a round about. In past staff and public both have same parking area along the hospital road but then in 2010 there was built a different parking area for public in the eastern side of the city hospital. There was also a bus station initiated in 2010 along the hospital road. There a turn built in 2010 on the way to city hospital. Althogh the location of city hospital and ring road remained same but there were many other things that were changed during that three years. City hospital is located in the north and the bus station or the roundabout is located in the east. It is the fine map of city hospital of 2007 and 2010. In 2010 the map is more advance and it is more covienient than 2007. The saparation of car parking for public and staff was a good idea.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several genuine changes, including the separation of staff and public parking, the addition of a bus station, and the replacement of the bus stops. However, the account is only partly complete: it does not clearly describe the two roundabouts, the bus station’s position west of Hospital Road, or the new public car park’s access from Ring Road. Some details are inaccurate or unclear, such as saying a bus stop “turned into a round about” and placing the bus station or roundabout to the east. The overview that the hospital and Ring Road stayed the same is relevant, but the final comments about the map being “fine” and “more convenient” are opinions rather than map features. Select and describe the main spatial changes more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response contains a basic sequence from 2007 to 2010, and linking phrases such as “but,” “after three years,” and “although” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, the information is presented as one continuous paragraph without a clear overview followed by organised details. Several sentences repeat or introduce points without explaining their relationship, for example, “There was also a bus station initiated in 2010” followed by “There a turn built in 2010.” The references in “it turned into a round about” and “It is the fine map” are also unclear. Group the changes by feature—road layout, bus facilities, and parking—and use clear references to the relevant map and locations.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “bus station,” “parking area,” “eastern side,” and “ring road,” so the reader can recognise the general subject. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing maps. “Turn” is too vague for the road feature, while “initiated” does not naturally describe a facility being added. Spelling errors such as “hosital,” “Althogh,” “covienient,” and “saparation” are noticeable and can slow understanding. The evaluative phrases “fine map” and “more advance” are also not suitable for an objective map summary. Build a more precise set of terms for locations, access, and changes, and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a few longer structures, including “Although the location of city hospital and ring road remained same but there were many other things that were changed,” but the sentence is not well controlled: “although” and “but” are used together, and articles are missing. Other examples include “In past staff and public both have same parking area,” where the time reference and verb form do not fit the past, and “There a turn built,” which lacks a complete verb structure. Most sentences follow simple patterns, with limited accurate variety, and errors in articles, tense, and sentence construction recur. Practise describing past map changes with consistent past-tense forms, complete clauses, and accurate articles; then combine ideas using one clear linking structure at a time.
