IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

this is information about two roads to reach the same place in two different years.mainly in 2007 there was less space for parking and no bus stand near the hospital. it was difficult for the patients as well as for the staff to park their cars in such a messy space.more over the bus stop was quiet away from the hospital so that the persons who come to visit their reletives in the hospital face difficulty to reach hospital.

in second picture, they tells us about hospital way in 2010 . in this year, they enhanced the facilities in the hospitla then 2007.they seperated the staff and public parking.bus stand was somehow nearer to hospital.moreover there was two roads to reach the hospital.it reduces the risk of traffic jam.

if we compare both these situtions, the setup in 2010 was better than 2007 in all aspects.it reduces the public inconvinenance .and also incease the efficiency of transport system.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad change from 2007 to 2010 and mention the separation of staff and public parking, the new bus station, and improved access. However, the response focuses heavily on opinions about convenience and traffic rather than clearly describing the map features. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: the bus stops were along Hospital Road in 2007, not simply “quiet away” from the hospital, and the 2010 map shows one Hospital Road with roundabouts at its two ends, rather than “two roads to reach the hospital.” A stronger overview would state that the bus stops were replaced by a bus station, the shared car park was divided, and a public car park was added beside Ring Road. Describe these changes precisely and avoid unsupported claims about their effects.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable progression: it discusses 2007, then 2010, and ends with a comparison. This makes the main time contrast reasonably easy to follow. Paragraphing and signposting such as “in second picture” and “if we compare” also help guide the reader. However, the organisation is weakened by repeated evaluative statements about difficulty and improvement, while the actual map details are not grouped systematically. Some links are mechanical, particularly the repeated “moreover,” and the reference in “they tells us” is unclear. Organise the response around the main changes—parking, bus facilities, and road access—and use clear comparisons within each point. This would create a more consistent progression and make the relationships between details easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing the topic, including “parking,” “staff,” “public,” “bus stand,” and “traffic jam,” so the general subject is understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or informal for a map report. “Bus stand” is less suitable than “bus station,” while “messy space” and “better in all aspects” express opinions rather than specific changes. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “reletives,” “hospitla,” “seperated,” and “inconvinenance,” which reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of terms for map changes, such as “was replaced by,” “was converted into,” and “was added,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example, “it was difficult for the patients as well as for the staff to park their cars,” and it uses past-tense forms to compare the two years. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and frequent errors sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “in second picture, they tells us,” where the article and verb form are incorrect, and “they enhanced the facilities … then 2007,” where the comparison pattern is faulty. There are also problems with agreement and sentence boundaries, as in “it reduces the public inconvinenance .and also incease.” Practise accurate past-tense descriptions and comparison structures, and use full stops and capital letters consistently.
