IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Between 2007 and 2010 a city hospital changed its road access as shown on the two maps.

In the 3 year gap shown, the City Hospital has significantly changed its distribution of services and amenities. Two roundabouts were developed, and the car parks were reorganized.

Moreover, the 2010 newly roundabouts were introduced in the intersection of City Road and Hospital Road. In addition, in between both roundabouts and on the right side of Hospital road, a new staff car park was constructed. This change forced to separate the previously staff and public car park into two divided car parks, one for staff and the second one for the public at the right wing of the Hospital.

Furthermore, the most impactful change was the construction of a bus station by the left side on Hospital Road. This improvement allowed to concentrate the previously separated bus stops into a main bus station.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main changes: two roundabouts were added, the shared car park was divided by use, and the bus stops were replaced by a bus station. These are relevant and mostly accurate, and the opening overview gives the reader a useful sense of the redevelopment. However, some details are unclear or misplaced. The new public car park is on the east side of Ring Road, not simply “at the right wing of the Hospital,” and the staff car park was the existing car park east of Hospital Road, rather than a new one between the roundabouts. You also do not clearly describe the bus station’s access links or the roundabouts’ positions at both ends of Hospital Road. More precise location reporting and a fuller comparison would strengthen the account.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall sequence: an introduction, a general overview, and then details about parking and bus facilities. Paragraphing helps separate the main points, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “Furthermore” make the progression easy to follow. This gives the account a coherent structure. At times, however, the links feel mechanical, and some references are not sufficiently clear. For example, “This change” does not precisely identify which change caused the separation, while “between both roundabouts” is difficult to reconcile with the location of the staff car park. Organising the details by comparing the 2007 and 2010 layouts, and using clearer location references, would make the progression more precise and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of map-related vocabulary, including “roundabouts,” “intersection,” “car parks,” “bus station,” and “construction.” Phrases such as “changed its road access” and “separated bus stops” communicate the broad nature of the redevelopment. There are also some imprecise or unnatural choices that limit precision: “distribution of services and amenities” is broad for describing specific map changes, and “right wing of the Hospital” is not an appropriate way to locate a car park. “Newly roundabouts” and “concentrate … into a main bus station” are also awkward collocations. Aim for direct, conventional map language and accurate directional terms; this will make your descriptions more natural and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the opening time clause “Between 2007 and 2010” and the relative clause “which allowed to concentrate…”. Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the 2010 newly roundabouts” has an incorrect word order, and “This change forced to separate” is missing a clear subject for the verb “forced.” In “allowed to concentrate,” the construction also needs an explicit subject or a different structure. There are some errors with articles and prepositions, as in “in the intersection” and “by the left side.” Review clause structure and preposition patterns, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
