IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The provided diagrams shows the comparison of road access to a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.

Overall, in 2010 two roundabouts were constructed the location of public car parking and staff car parking was separated.

Turning to the details, 2007 the ring road was simply connected to the hospital road and city road. Also, in 2007 there was no bus station. In 2010, two roundabouts were built in front of hospital which were connected to bus stop. The first roundabout was connected with bus stop and ring road so that public coming from city road could have easy access to bus station via second roundabout and then to hospital through the second roundabout. In 2007 car parking and bus parking was on the south-east corner of map but in 2010 that was only limited to staff. On the east side of ring road, a new public car park was introduced and bus station was moved on the other side of the road

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main changes: two roundabouts were added, the former shared parking area became staff-only, and a separate public car park appeared. The response also notes that the bus stops were replaced by a bus station, although this change could be stated more precisely. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: the 2007 road layout is not simply a connection between Ring Road, Hospital Road and City Road, and the bus station is not connected to the roundabouts in the way described. The account of how people travel between the roads and hospital is also confusing. A clearer overview and more accurate descriptions of the station’s access and the car parks’ locations would make the key comparisons more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and a paragraph of details. Time markers such as “in 2007” and “in 2010” help distinguish the maps. However, progression within the detail paragraph is uneven: it moves from roundabouts to bus access, then back to parking, making the comparison harder to follow. The long sentence beginning “The first roundabout was connected…” contains several linked ideas and repeats “second roundabout,” so the route is difficult to understand. Organise the details by feature—for example, road layout and bus facilities, followed by parking—and use clearer references to each roundabout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “roundabouts,” “Ring Road,” “public car park” and “south-east corner,” which allows the reader to identify many features. However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “the location of public car parking and staff car parking was separated” is an awkward way to describe the change in parking provision, while “bus parking” does not accurately name the bus stops or bus station. “Built in front of hospital” is also vague for describing map positions. Use precise terms such as “designated,” “replaced,” “located to the west of,” and “direct access” to report changes and positions more clearly. Avoid repeating “connected” when a more specific relationship can be named.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “two roundabouts were built in front of hospital which were connected to bus stop” and a purpose clause with “so that.” Some errors remain, but the main message is generally understandable. Subject–verb agreement is incorrect in “diagrams shows,” and articles are missing in phrases such as “in front of hospital” and “to bus stop.” The opening detail sentence also needs a time phrase (“In 2007”) and clearer sentence construction. In the long route description, the repeated references to “the second roundabout” make the grammatical relationships difficult to track. Check articles, agreement and sentence boundaries, and keep route descriptions concise.
