IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The maps demonstrate the changes in city hospital road from 2007 to 2010. Overall it resulted in a more accessible term compared to 2007 structure.

In 2007 the ring road had only a single route which connects the parking of staff and public, and further connects the city road with the entrance of hospital road which was not spacious, and causes a major problem in city route traffic and hospital traffic.

However in 2010 chnages were made and ring road was given access for different routes and solved the problem of the parking, which helped public, staff and bus station to have a seprate block of parking.Furthermore, a minor change in city traffic route were also made by conecting bus station access with the city road which connects both at roundabout. The roundabout at hospital road and city road helped both traffic issues and parking hurdles for public and hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the period and give an overall comparison, noting that changes were made by 2010. You also mention the parking and the bus station, which are relevant features. However, the overview is unclear (“more accessible term”), and several details do not match the maps: the bus station was not a separate parking block, and its access is not described as connecting to City Road; it connects to Hospital Road near the two roundabouts. The key changes—the removal of the individual bus stops, the conversion of the original car park to staff use, and the addition of a public car park off Ring Road—are not clearly reported. The response is also two words below the required minimum. Develop a precise overview and describe the main changes accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a basic progression from 2007 to 2010, and the opening overview followed by time-based details gives the reader a general route through the comparison. “However” also signals the shift between the maps. At times, though, the long sentences combine several changes and claims, making the relationships difficult to follow; for example, the final sentence links roundabouts, traffic issues and parking hurdles without clearly explaining each feature. Some connections are also unclear, such as “which connects both at roundabout.” Use separate sentences for the road layout, parking changes and bus facilities, and make each comparison explicit. This would make the overall organisation more coherent and reduce reliance on broad linking words.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt some task-relevant vocabulary, including “ring road,” “parking,” “entrance” and “roundabout,” and use terms such as “separate” to distinguish facilities. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the map description hard to interpret. “More accessible term” does not express the intended overview, while “separate block of parking” mislabels the bus station and car parks. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “chnages,” “seprate” and “conecting.” Aim for precise map vocabulary and natural collocations, such as “access road,” “designated staff car park” and “a new public car park.” Proofreading spelling will further improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and longer sentences, and the time references help establish the comparison between 2007 and 2010. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in agreement and sentence construction. For example, “a minor change … were also made” has a singular subject with a plural verb, and “the ring road had only a single route which connects” shifts awkwardly between past and present. The clause “which was not spacious, and causes” also has inconsistent tense and unclear reference. In the final sentence, “both traffic issues and parking hurdles” does not form a clear grammatical relationship with the roundabout. Use shorter, controlled sentences and check subject–verb agreement, tense consistency and punctuation when joining clauses.
