IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pair of maps depict transformation in road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the aim of developement is only to make a good transportation system. They also seperate the parking of public and staff for good parking. They added a bus station to provide an ease for their transportation on the left side.

In 2007, they only had one place for car parking for both their employees and the public. So, they faced a lot of difficulty for parking outside the City Hospital. Then in 2010, they changed their parking area and they do seperate parking space for public and staff. They made public parking space on the right side of hospital and for staff they remained the same area of parking.

For good quality of transportation system, they remove bus stop from the East of City Hospital. They added a bus station on the left side of staff parking for the convenience of public and staff. Where the bus stop was located in 2007, they made a roundabout on that place for the good traffic control.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main changes: the shared parking area becomes separate staff and public car parks, bus stops are replaced by a bus station, and roundabouts are introduced. These are relevant features, and the overview recognises the general shift towards reorganised access. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. The public car park is on the east side of Ring Road, not simply on the right side of the hospital, and the maps show two roundabouts—at the Ring Road and City Road junctions—not one where a bus stop had been. The claim that parking difficulties were faced and that changes were made “for good traffic control” adds explanations not shown by the maps. More precise reporting of the locations and both roundabouts would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overall statement, and separate paragraphs describing the changes. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is sometimes weakened by repeated explanations of the purpose of the changes, such as “for good quality of transportation system” and “for the convenience of public and staff,” rather than a clear sequence of map features. Some references are also difficult to follow: “Where the bus stop was located” does not clearly identify which location, and “they” is used repeatedly without a clear referent. Group the changes by access, parking and public transport, and use precise location references to make the links between sentences clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “car parking,” “bus station,” “roundabout,” and “staff,” so the main subject is generally clear. There is also an attempt to describe change with phrases such as “remained the same” and “added.” However, several word choices and collocations are awkward or imprecise, including “the aim of developement,” “provide an ease,” and “do seperate parking space.” Spelling errors such as “developement” and “seperate” also reduce accuracy. Some wording is repetitive, particularly “good” and “parking space.” Use more precise map language and standard collocations, for example “the layout was redesigned,” “provide easier access,” and “separate parking areas.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, and the main changes can usually be understood. For example, “In 2007, they only had one place for car parking for both their employees and the public” communicates the shared facility, while “Then in 2010…” signals a time comparison. Some grammatical errors remain, however. “The aim … is only to make” is an awkward construction for describing a completed map change, and “they do seperate parking space” has an incorrect verb form and missing article or plural marking. The sentence beginning “Where the bus stop was located” is also an incomplete or poorly connected clause. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions and complete sentence structures, while varying sentence patterns more confidently.
