IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The maps illustrate how the road changed to het access to a hospital in city between the time period in 2007 and 2010. Overall, despite some features remained the same, the infrastructure of the city hospital improved the transport parking services.
In 2007, there was a ring road in the north of the city hospita. In the southeast corner, there was the parking for staff and public which was beside the bus stop. In the center of the bus stop, there was the hospital road. In the south-east side, there was the city road.
However in 2010, the place of the ring road remained the same. Car park location changed over time which located at the north side of the city hopital. The car park which was for staff and public was then only for the public use. A roundabout was also construted at the both sides of the hospital road. In the west side of the hospital road, there was the bus station and on the east side, a staff car prking was located.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You provide an overview that the hospital’s transport and parking arrangements changed, and you identify several key developments, including the bus station and the separation of staff and public parking. However, some locations and changes are misreported: the new public car park is on the east side of the Ring Road, not north of the hospital, and the 2007 shared car park became the staff car park in 2010, rather than becoming public-only. The description of the 2007 layout is also unclear, particularly the placement of the bus stops and Hospital Road. To make the account more complete and accurate, compare the two maps directly and report the roundabouts at both ends of Hospital Road, the removal of the individual bus stops, and the new bus station access.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by separate descriptions of 2007 and 2010. The time markers “In 2007” and “However in 2010” help readers follow the comparison. However, some connections between ideas are unclear or mechanical. For example, “In the center of the bus stop, there was the hospital road” makes the relationship between the road and stops difficult to understand, while “In the south-east side” does not clearly locate City Road. The overview also does not prepare the reader for the specific changes that follow. Grouping the main changes—road access, bus facilities, and parking—into clearer comparisons would improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “ring road,” “car park,” “bus station,” and “roundabout,” and you attempt to describe change with phrases such as “remained the same” and “changed over time.” However, the range and precision are limited, and several word-choice or spelling errors reduce clarity: “het access,” “hospita,” “hopital,” “construted,” and “prking.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “the parking for staff and public” and “at the both sides.” Use standard map-description collocations and precise directional language, for example, “a car park for staff and the public” and “at both ends of Hospital Road.” Proofreading spelling and choosing more exact location terms would make the description easier to follow.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “despite” and a relative clause beginning “The car park which was…”. Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms occur across the response. For example, “despite some features remained the same” needs a noun phrase or a clause introduced by “although,” and “Car park location changed over time which located…” lacks a clear grammatical connection. There are also problems with articles and prepositions, as in “at the both sides” and “in the north of the city hospita.” Aim for complete, controlled clauses, such as “Although some features remained unchanged, access and parking were reorganised.” Check verb forms and sentence boundaries when revising.
