IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The Maps illustrate the road access to city hospital between 2007 to 2010.

Overall, drastic changes have been made around the city hospital. Multiple roundabouts have been built in front of city hospital in 2010. Public and staff car parks have separate areas in 2010 as compared to 2007.

Roads around the city hospital were simple in 2007. In the south of hospital a straight road was there and on the east of that road was staff and public car park. However in 2010 two roundabouts were built instead of straight roads. These roundabouts connected the newly built bus station on the south-west of the hospital. The bus station has another entry through the city road which is located at the south of the bus station. In 2007 there were a total of 6 bus stops at the the south of hospital. Furthermore in 2010 the staff car park was made opposite of the bus station. However, the public car park was made at the east of the hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main overall changes: the road layout was altered, roundabouts were added, and the two car parks became separate facilities. You also report the former bus stops and the new bus station, so the response covers the key stages. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. The roundabouts were added at the junctions of Hospital Road with Ring Road and City Road, rather than replacing the straight road itself. The bus station is west of Hospital Road, and its access connects to both roundabouts; it is not clearly described as being south-west of the hospital or as having an entry through City Road. The public car park is east of Ring Road, not simply east of the hospital. More precise comparisons would make the account fuller and clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing the maps. The overview usefully groups the main changes, and sequencing from 2007 to 2010 is generally understandable. However, the final paragraph combines several features without a consistently clear spatial progression, making relationships between the roads, bus station and car parks harder to follow. For example, “These roundabouts connected the newly built bus station” does not specify how the connections work, while “The bus station has another entry through the city road” is difficult to interpret. Some linking words, such as “However” and “Furthermore,” are used mechanically or do not express a clear contrast. Organise the details by location or by change, and use more precise referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing maps, including “roundabouts,” “bus station,” “car park,” “connected,” and “separate areas.” This gives you an adequate range for the task, and the main meaning is usually clear. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural: “drastic changes” is stronger than necessary, “in front of city hospital” is vague, and “made opposite of the bus station” does not clearly describe the staff car park’s position. “Entry through the city road” is also an awkward way to describe road access. Aim for accurate map language such as “at the junction,” “to the west of,” and “direct access from.” Check small presentation details too, including the unnecessary capital in “The Maps” and the repeated space in “the east.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including “Public and staff car parks have separate areas in 2010 as compared to 2007” and a sentence beginning “However.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening “between 2007 to 2010” uses the wrong preposition pattern; write “between 2007 and 2010.” Articles and possessives are also missing in phrases such as “in front of city hospital” and “south of hospital,” which need “the city hospital” and “the hospital.” In “In the south of hospital a straight road was there,” the word order is awkward; a clearer structure is “A straight road ran south of the hospital.” Review tense consistency when describing completed changes, and punctuate sentences carefully, including avoiding the extra space after full stops.
