IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram compares changes in the road to get to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the road access to a city hospital had undergone significant changes. In 2010, bus stops were abolished and was replaced by a bus station closer to the hospital. A dedicated car park was constructed for the staff and public to use. Additionally, two roundabouts were developed to connect the roads.

In 2007, the city road and the hospital road were connected directly, while the hospital road and the ring road were linked directly. The city hospital was located in the center of the ring road. On the east side of the hospital road a parking space was dedicated for the staff and public to park their cars. Bus stops were located in the extreme east side of the hospital.

There was significant infrastructure changes in 2010 to reach to the city hospital. A roundabout was constructed to connect the city road and the hospital road. Another roundabout was added between the hospital road and the city hospital. A bus station was developed on the west side of the hospital road. The car park on the east of the hospital road which was earlier shared by both the staff and public is now dedicated for the staff only. A dedicated car parking space for the public was developed on the right side of the ring road providing direct access to the city hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main changes and provide a clear overview: the bus stops disappear, a bus station is added, parking is separated by user, and two roundabouts are introduced. Most locations are reported accurately, including the staff car park east of Hospital Road and the public car park beside Ring Road. However, a few details are imprecise: the bus stops were on both sides of Hospital Road, not only at the “extreme east side,” and the new public car park is accessed from Ring Road rather than providing direct access to the hospital. The claim that the bus station is “closer to the hospital” is also not clearly supported by the maps. Overall, the response covers the task and selects relevant features, though these over-generalisations limit precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, overview, and separate descriptions of the two years. This helps the reader follow the comparison, and time markers such as “In 2007” and “in 2010” establish a basic progression. However, the organisation is not consistently efficient: the final paragraph repeats several points already stated in the overview, while the 2007 paragraph gives details without clearly grouping them by location or change. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Additionally” and “Another.” The reference in “between the hospital road and the city hospital” is also unclear because the roundabout is at the Ring Road junction. Grouping related changes and using clearer comparisons would make the progression more cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “roundabouts,” “dedicated,” “direct access,” and “shared,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is also some flexibility in describing changes through verbs such as “constructed,” “added,” and “developed.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for map descriptions. “Road to get to a city hospital” is less concise than “road access to the hospital,” and “parking space” is less precise than “car park.” “Extreme east side” does not accurately describe the bus-stop layout, and “right side” is less appropriate than a compass direction. More consistent use of precise location terms and natural collocations would strengthen the vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including relative clauses such as “which was earlier shared by both the staff and public,” and most sentences communicate the intended meaning. Some grammatical errors remain. In the overview, “bus stops were abolished and was replaced” has a subject–verb agreement problem; the plural subject requires “were replaced.” “There was significant infrastructure changes” should use “were,” and “to reach to the city hospital” has an unnecessary preposition. The sentence “A dedicated car parking space for the public was developed … providing direct access” also attaches the final phrase unclearly. Check agreement, verb forms, and sentence links, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
