Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies the topic and attempts an overview, noting that the hospital access changed and that a bus station and roundabouts were added. However, it reports very little of the map information: the description stops partway through the 2007 layout and gives no account of the 2010 changes, such as the separate staff and public car parks or the removal of individual bus stops. The claim that the hospital is surrounded by the Ring Road “from all sides” is also inaccurate; the map shows it on the north, west and east sides. The required minimum of 150 words is not met, which contributes to the task being addressed only minimally. Describe both years and compare the main changes to develop a complete summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response into an introduction, an overview and a detail paragraph, and the opening “Overall” signals a shift to the main features. This gives the short response some structure. However, the final paragraph ends abruptly at “in front of the”, so the progression is incomplete and the reader cannot follow the intended description. The overview also makes broad claims without then explaining them in an organised comparison of 2007 and 2010. Use one paragraph for the overall changes and separate, complete paragraphs to describe the two maps or group related changes. Linking phrases such as “By 2010” and “In contrast” would help make the comparison clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some relevant vocabulary for describing maps, including “access”, “ring road”, “bus stops”, “bus station” and “roundabouts”. “Road network” is also a useful summary phrase. However, the range is limited because the response is very short, and some wording is imprecise or unnatural: “the way to access” is less suitable than a phrase describing road access, while “the road considerably developed” does not clearly express what changed. There is also a spelling error in “coverd”. Aim for precise map language, such as “was located”, “was replaced by” and “was added”, and use directional terms to report locations accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a few sentence forms, including an introductory sentence and an overview beginning with “Overall”. However, control is uneven. In “The two maps illustrates”, the plural subject requires a plural verb; “the city hospital road considerably developed” is missing an appropriate verb construction; and “city hospital is coverd” has an incorrect verb form. The phrase “there is multiple bus stops” also has subject–verb disagreement. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “In 2007” and “city hospital”, and the final sentence is incomplete. Practise accurate present and past forms for map descriptions, especially “shows”, “was”, and “were”, and check agreement and sentence completion before submitting.
