IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps displays the comparison of road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the most striking difference was the addition of roundabouts around the city hospital in 2010 compared to zero roundabouts in 2007.
In 2007, hospital can be accessed by the hospital road which intersected with the city road. There were trees on both sides of the hospital road and on the right side of it is where the car park for both the staff and public located. The ring road circled the city hospital and bus stop was quite far from the hospital, locating at the south eastern side of the hospital with no road bridging it to the hospital.
However in 2010, there was a roundabout at the intersection of the hospital road and city road. A large bus station which was larger than the bust stop in 2007, was moved from the previous place to the left side of the hospital road which was previously an empty space. The station can be reached by a road that branched off from the previous roundabout, and there is a road at the other side of the bus station that lead to the another roudabout which was built at the intersection of hospital road and ring road, locating at the in front of the hospital. The car park which was on the right side of the hospital road is now exclusively for the staff while a new separate car pak was built for public on the right side of the hospital, just across the ring road. The tree from both sides of the hospital road were all gone in 2010. Additionally, ther was a new roundabout far

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main change—the introduction of roundabouts—and describe several relevant developments, including the bus station and the separation of staff and public parking. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the 2007 bus stops were positioned on both sides of Hospital Road, not far away to the south-east, and the bus station was newly introduced rather than moved from its previous location. The overview focuses on roundabouts but could better summarise the broader reorganisation of transport and parking. The final sentence is also unfinished, leaving the additional roundabout point incomplete. More precise reporting of the map and a concise, complete overview would make the key comparisons clearer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two years. The contrastive opening “However in 2010” helps signal the shift between maps, and the details generally follow the road layout. Cohesion is less controlled in the long final paragraph, where several changes are joined into extended sentences, making relationships between features harder to follow. References such as “the previous roundabout” are unclear because the 2007 map had no roundabouts, and the response ends abruptly with “Additionally, ther was a new roundabout far”. Use shorter sentences, clearer references, and a complete final statement to improve progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of map-related vocabulary, including “intersection”, “branched off”, “exclusively” and “separate”, which helps describe changes in access and parking. Some choices are imprecise or repetitive: “bus stop” is used where the 2010 feature is a bus station, and “moved from the previous place” incorrectly suggests relocation rather than a new facility. There are also spelling errors such as “roudabout”, “car pak” and “ther”, alongside awkward phrases such as “locating at the in front”. These do not prevent the reader from understanding the general account, but more accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make the description more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and clauses linked with “while” and “which”. The main meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The maps displays” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the car park … located” is missing a verb. Articles and sentence construction are also problematic in “hospital can be accessed” and “lead to the another roudabout”; the final sentence is incomplete. Long sentences in the 2010 paragraph make these issues more noticeable. Check agreement, include required verbs and articles, and divide complex descriptions into complete sentences while retaining a mix of structures.
