IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two images present the changes happened in the City Hospital between 2007 and 2010.

Overall, City Hospital illustrated significant changes after the re-development. The new area has been added for parking flexibility for the Hospital's staff and people who come to visit. Although a separate Bus station has been developed near the newly made roundabout. While City road and a road around the City Hospital remained the same.

In 2007, the City hospital has a common parking for the staff and individuals, beside of the parking, there were total six Bus points with three on each side of Hospital road. The City road was connected to the Hospital road, and the Hospital road also joints with Ring road.

In 2010, the ring road remained same as before, but the new area has been made for public parking on North-eastern side of the plan. Also, Bus point has been replaced by the Bus station on the left side of Hospital road, and on the right, the separate section has been designated for Staff parking. The connecting point of roads changed into roundabouts and it connects the bus station, way to City hospital Road and main City Road

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You identify the main transformation clearly: the shared car park becomes separate staff and public facilities, the bus stops are replaced by a bus station, and roundabouts are added. The overview also notes that the surrounding roads remain largely unchanged, giving the response a clear account of the overall development. Most locations are reported accurately, including the public car park to the north-east and the bus station west of Hospital Road. To make the account more fully developed, describe the two roundabouts more precisely: they are at the Ring Road and City Road junctions, rather than simply saying the connecting point of roads changed. The final sentence is also unclear about which routes connect to the bus station.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear four-part structure: introduction, overview, and separate descriptions of 2007 and 2010. This chronological organisation makes the comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “In 2007” and “In 2010” guide the reader effectively. The overview also groups the major changes before the details. However, some linking is awkward or incomplete: “Although a separate Bus station…” is a fragment, and “While City road…” is another dependent clause without a main clause. The final sentence joins several ideas without clearly showing their relationships. Use complete sentences and connect each change to its location or purpose more explicitly to make the progression smoother and more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of map vocabulary, including “designated,” “replaced,” “connected,” and “roundabouts,” and the reader can generally understand the changes. There are also useful attempts to describe function, such as “separate section” for staff parking. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, however: “Bus points” is less appropriate than “bus stops,” “common parking” is unclear, and “parking flexibility” does not accurately express the provision of separate parking areas. Capitalisation of ordinary labels such as “bus station” and “City road” is inconsistent. Aim for precise, conventional map terms and natural collocations; this will improve clarity without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex structures, including the overview sentence beginning “Although” and the contrast introduced by “While.” However, these dependent clauses are left incomplete, and several verb forms or sentence patterns are inaccurate. For example, “the changes happened” would be better expressed as “the changes that took place,” while “the Hospital road also joints” has an incorrect verb form. In “the new area has been made,” the present perfect is not appropriate for describing a completed change in 2010; use the past simple or passive past. Articles and prepositions also need attention, as in “beside of the parking.” Practise complete clause structures and consistent past-tense descriptions.
