IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
the two maps provided illustrate the road access to a city hospital in the year of 2007 and the year 2010.
overall, it is clear that there were several changes to the road network surrounding the hospital in 2007 and 2010. some visible changes took place whih were quite necessary for the convinience of people.
in 2007, the bus stop was quite far for people and it could be a problem as many people who come to hospital are old or sick. there was only one parking which was for both the staff and the public, same parking for both can cause the car park to be really packed along with that it would just be a total chaos.
By 2010, the roundabouts were added at the junctions of hospital road and city road. seperate car park for the staff and public were introduced along with that the bus stop was also relocated near the hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the broad change from 2007 to 2010, including the addition of roundabouts and the separation of staff and public parking. However, the account does not fully describe the maps: it says the bus stop was “relocated near the hospital,” whereas the individual stops were replaced by a bus station west of Hospital Road, and the new public car park was placed east of Ring Road. The overview also focuses on people’s convenience rather than clearly summarising the main physical changes. The comments about older or sick visitors and possible congestion are speculative and are not shown by the maps. Report the locations and changes directly, and develop the comparison of the road and bus facilities more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable sequence: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph about 2007, and a final paragraph about 2010. This gives the reader a basic chronological structure. However, the progression is weakened by mixing map description with unsupported opinions, such as the claim that the bus stops were “quite far” and that the car park would cause “total chaos.” The final paragraph also combines several changes in one sentence, making their relationships less clear. Use a more systematic comparison of the two years, with one paragraph for the 2007 layout and another for the 2010 changes. Linking phrases such as “In contrast” or “Meanwhile” can clarify comparisons without making the writing feel list-like.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “road network,” “junctions,” “roundabouts,” and “car park,” so the main subject is generally clear. However, several choices are imprecise or informal for an academic map report: “quite far for people,” “total chaos,” and “quite necessary” express opinions rather than neutral description. “The bus stop was also relocated” is also inaccurate because the map shows a bus station replacing individual stops. Spelling errors such as “whih,” “convinience,” and “seperate” further reduce accuracy. Aim for precise map language, such as describing facilities as “replaced,” “converted,” or “located to the west of” a road, and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, for example, “there were several changes to the road network” and the sentence beginning “same parking for both can cause…”. Meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. The phrase “in the year of 2007 and the year 2010” is awkwardly formed, while “there was only one parking” uses an incorrect noun construction; “there was one car park” would be clearer. In “seperate car park for the staff and public were introduced,” the plural verb does not agree with the singular subject, and the article is missing. Capitalise sentence openings and place full stops carefully, especially where several ideas are joined with commas.
