IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps give information about road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the road was redeveloped considerably in the later year, making journey to hospital a lot easier and compareably more comfortable.

To start with, in 2007 the hospital had only one parking for both general public and hospital staff. A city road use to lead the patients toward hospital Rd that contain six different bus stop. The city hospital was surronded by a ring road.

However, in 2010 the healthcare center still has a ring road arround it; but, the hospital has now constructed separate parking spaces for public and staff. The public parking is located in the east of hospital, while staff car park is towards the hosiptals' south. The hospital has a new roundabout that lead the people towards bus station and hospital Rd. Futhermore, their is another roundabout next to hospital Rd that lead people to city road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main change from a shared car park and roadside bus stops to separate parking and a bus station, and you note the ring road and new roundabouts. However, some details are inaccurate: the public car park is on the east side of the Ring Road, not simply east of the hospital, while the staff car park remains east of Hospital Road rather than being to the hospital’s south. The overview’s claim that access became “more comfortable” is not directly shown by the maps. The response also contains 145 words, below the required 150, with 10 prompt words excluded from the count. Add a little more precise comparison, including the removal of the individual bus stops.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the two years. The progression from 2007 to 2010 is easy to follow, and “However” and “Furthermore” help signal the comparison and added features. This coherent arrangement supports the reader, but some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “However” introduces the 2010 description even though the ring road is unchanged, and “their” in “their is another roundabout” makes the reference less clear. The 2007 details are compressed into one sentence, while the 2010 features are listed without fully explaining their locations. Use more precise linking and organise each year’s road, parking and bus access in a consistent order.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary such as “ring road,” “parking spaces,” “bus station” and “roundabout,” and you attempt some variation with “redeveloped” and “separate.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal for an IELTS map report: “one parking,” “a lot easier,” and “towards hospital” are not natural in this context. Spelling errors, including “surronded,” “hosiptals’” and “Futhermore,” are noticeable and reduce precision. Some alternatives, such as “healthcare center,” do not add useful variety when the map labels the feature as a hospital. Aim for accurate, consistent terms and check spelling; precise location phrases will also help distinguish the two car parks.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some more complex forms, including “while” and a semicolon, so there is an attempt to vary sentence structure. The main information is generally understandable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms remain noticeable. For example, “a city road use to lead” needs a past-tense form, and “six different bus stop” requires plural agreement. In “the hospital has a new roundabout that lead,” the verb does not agree with its subject; “their is” also has an incorrect form. Articles and prepositions are sometimes missing or awkward, as in “toward hospital.” Review past-tense descriptions, subject–verb agreement, articles and plural nouns, then proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries.
