IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps compare the city hospitals's area such as, developed new public car park, staff car parking and bus station over here in 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the two roundabout circuls established on hospital road to city road for managing traffic control in 2010. In contrast, there were not any roundabout circuls from hospital to city road in 2007.
On the one hand, the car parking were designed for staffs and public in a one area in 2007 at right hand side front of hospital wherease, it would be seperated in two parts such as, the one car park remained same for staff only and other car park developed for public on right side of city hospital.
On the other hand, the left side area was empty for used in 2007. While, that area was developed in bus station and which connected to city road as well as hospital road for public convenience.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify several major changes, including the separation of staff and public parking and the addition of a bus station, and you attempt an overall comparison between the two years. These are relevant features and show a sound grasp of the maps. However, some important details are missing or unclear: the bus stops present on both sides of Hospital Road in 2007 were removed, and the new public car park was on the east side of Ring Road, not simply on the right side of the hospital. The overview also misstates the roundabouts: one was added at each end of Hospital Road, rather than both being established “to city road.” To strengthen the response, report locations more precisely and cover the removal of the bus stops as well as the new road layout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing changes to parking and bus facilities. The contrast markers “In contrast,” “On the one hand,” and “On the other hand” help signal relationships between points. However, some links are mechanical or do not clearly match the ideas being compared, and the progression within paragraphs is occasionally difficult to follow. For example, “While, that area was developed in bus station” does not clearly connect the empty area in 2007 to its later use. The reference “that area” is also imprecise. Organise the details by feature or location, and use clearer links such as “By 2010” and “Meanwhile” to make the changes easier to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “public car park,” “staff,” “bus station,” and “connected,” so the reader can identify the main subjects. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or awkward, which sometimes makes the description hard to interpret. Examples include “roundabout circuls,” “car parking were designed,” and “developed in bus station”; “circuls” is also a spelling error. Phrases such as “over here” and “right hand side front of hospital” are informal or imprecise for an academic map report. Aim for standard terms such as “roundabouts,” “parking was provided,” and “a bus station was built,” and use compass directions to describe locations accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including clauses linked with “whereas” and “which,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in agreement and sentence construction appear in examples such as “the car parking were designed” and “that area was developed in bus station and which connected.” The opening sentence also has an incomplete construction after “such as,” while commas interrupt clauses in places such as “While, that area.” These problems can make relationships between changes unclear. Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles, and clause links. For example: “In 2007, staff and public shared one car park; by 2010, it had been divided into separate facilities.”
