IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagrams display the passage way to city hospital in the year 2007 and 2010. Overall, there is a huge change in the hospital route after three years because there are several changes and also addition of roundabouts in 2010.
However, there was a bus stop infront of the city hospital in old map which is replaced by public parking lately. According to the given diagram, the City Road was connected with Hospital Road and by turning left there was a long distance of Ring Road which was compulsory to reach the desired location. After completing the whole rectangular path, then there was a car parking for staff and public.
In addition, there was a shortcut route to city hospital in 2010. Bus station, City and Hospital road were joined by two roundabouts. In this way, the entry to city hospital became easy and extra parking was also available.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall change: the access layout was redesigned by 2010, with roundabouts and additional parking. You also mention the bus station and the separation of parking, so the response addresses the maps and includes relevant comparisons. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate. The 2007 bus stops were positioned along Hospital Road, not “infront of the city hospital,” and the public car park was not a replacement for a bus stop; the existing shared car park became staff-only, while a separate public car park was added beside Ring Road. The description of the 2007 route as a “long distance” rectangular path is also confusing. More precise reporting of these changes would make the account more complete and better supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by details about 2007 and then the 2010 arrangement. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “In addition” help signal movement between points. The progression is not always clear, though: the second paragraph shifts between bus stops, the road layout, and parking without consistently distinguishing the two maps. “According to the given diagram” and “In this way” are also somewhat mechanical, and “the desired location” has no clear reference. Grouping the changes by feature—roads and roundabouts, bus facilities, then parking—and using clearer references to each year would make the comparisons easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for describing map changes, including “connected,” “roundabouts,” “bus station,” “shortcut route,” and “parking.” This gives you an adequate range for the task, but several choices are imprecise or unnatural. “Passage way” is not the usual term for road access, “infront” is incorrectly formed, and “public parking” is less precise than “public car park.” The phrase “long distance of Ring Road” does not clearly describe the road’s position or route, while “desired location” is vague. Aim for accurate map language such as “located to the east of,” “ran along,” and “provided access to,” and use “car park” consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example, “Overall, there is a huge change … because there are several changes” and “In this way, the entry to city hospital became easy.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical choices reduce accuracy. The opening uses the present tense (“display”) for maps showing past years, and “there was a bus stop … which is replaced” shifts inconsistently between past and present. In “City Road was connected with Hospital Road,” the passive construction is awkward for describing the map. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “to city hospital” and the long sentence beginning “According to the given diagram.” Keep the description consistently in the past tense and check articles and clause structure.
