IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The two maps below illustrate the changes that have taken place in the layout of the road access to a city hospital between 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the road has undergone significant renovation, there was no new facilities added to the road. In contrast, the previous facilities have been changed their locations.
In 2007, the main entrance of the hospital city was located in lower-right, near the car used by either public and hospital staff. The bus stop was located to the right of the hospital city. There was no roundabout at all in that time.
Since then, the road access to the hospital has experienced extensive changes. Staff car park remained in the same location, while the public park was moved to the city hospital right side. Two roundabout have been installed in the hospital road. A bus station has been added to the left side of the hospital road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad changes, including the two roundabouts, the bus station and the separation of parking, but several key details are inaccurate or unclear. The 2007 map shows the shared car park east of Hospital Road, not near the hospital’s “lower-right” entrance, and the bus stops are on both sides of Hospital Road rather than only to the right of the hospital. In 2010, the public car park is newly added beside the Ring Road; it was not simply moved to the hospital’s right side. The overview also says no new facilities were added, which conflicts with the new bus station and public car park. A clearer overview and more precise comparisons of the maps would make the report more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate descriptions of the two time periods. The transition “Since then” helps signal the move to the 2010 changes, and the main developments are presented in a generally understandable order. However, the overview is difficult to follow because it first says there were no new facilities, then the final paragraph says a bus station was added. Some references, such as “the road” and “the previous facilities,” are also too general to make the relationships between features clear. Use more precise links and organise the comparison around the hospital road, parking, and bus access so the progression is easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “roundabout,” “car park,” “bus station,” and “road access,” and “extensive changes” conveys the scale of redevelopment. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “car used by either public and hospital staff” does not clearly name a car park, while “public park” is not the same as “public car park.” “Hospital city” is also an unnatural way to refer to the facility, and “moved to the city hospital right side” is imprecise. Choose exact labels from the map and use natural phrases such as “the hospital,” “shared car park,” and “on the east side of Hospital Road.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response includes both simple statements and attempts at more complex structures, such as “Staff car park remained in the same location, while…” This gives the account some sentence variety, but errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships difficult to understand. For example, “Overall, the road has undergone significant renovation, there was…” joins two clauses incorrectly and shifts tense; “the previous facilities have been changed their locations” has an incorrect verb construction; and “Two roundabout have been installed” has a plural-agreement error. There are also problems with articles and word order in “the hospital city” and “in lower-right.” Practise accurate past-tense descriptions and use shorter, complete sentences when comparing map features.
