IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The map demonstrates the road access to the City Hospital in 2007 and 2010. City hospital is located to the South of Ring Road making it in the Hub of the City.
In 2007, there existed multiple Bus Stops at the left and right of the hospital road which was replaced by a single bus stop in 2010 at the east of the road. At the East of Hospital Road there existed a Car Parking for Staff and Public. The Hospital road then connects to the City Hospital directly. However, the direct entrance has been replaced by a roundabout in 2010 at the conjunction of road and the Hospital.
The bus station was also given a huge seperate area at the left of the hospital road. The incorporation of 2 roundabouts at both the entrance and exit of hospital road is constructed for split of the traffic.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the two years and report several relevant changes, including the removal of the individual bus stops, the separation of staff and public parking, and the addition of roundabouts. However, the account is only partial and contains important inaccuracies: the 2010 map shows a bus station, not a single bus stop, and the hospital is north of the roads described as surrounding it, rather than south of Ring Road. The overview is also unclear, and the claim that the roundabouts were built to split traffic adds a purpose not shown by the maps. Include the new public car park east of Ring Road and describe the bus station’s connections more precisely. The response is three words below the required minimum.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic sequence, moving from the general location to changes in 2007 and 2010, and paragraph breaks help separate the introduction from the details. Linking words such as “However” and “also” show an attempt to connect ideas. Nevertheless, the progression is not consistently clear: the first paragraph gives a confusing location statement, while the second combines bus stops, parking, and the road entrance without a clear comparison structure. The final paragraph introduces the bus station and then an unsupported explanation of the roundabouts. Organise the report around an overview followed by grouped changes, and use clear references such as “the former shared car park” to make relationships easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “Bus Stops,” “Car Parking,” “entrance,” and “roundabouts,” so the reader can understand the general subject. There is also an attempt to use more formal language, for example “incorporation.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing maps: “in the Hub of the City,” “at the conjunction of road and the Hospital,” and “a huge seperate area” do not express the locations precisely. “Single bus stop” also mislabels the 2010 bus station, and “left” would be clearer as “west.” Aim for precise directional language and standard map terms, such as “located to the west of” and “was converted into.” Check spelling, including “separate.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which was replaced by a single bus stop” and a contrast introduced by “However.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable. However, control is uneven in several sentence patterns. For example, “City hospital is located to the South of Ring Road making it in the Hub” has an unclear participle construction, and “The Hospital road then connects to the City Hospital directly” uses an awkwardly formed relationship between the road and hospital. The final sentence, “is constructed for split of the traffic,” also has an incomplete grammatical pattern. Practise describing changes with accurate passive forms, such as “was replaced by,” and check articles and sentence boundaries.
