IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given maps show changes in the access of road to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
In general, it can be cleary seen that there were many changes in the city hospital and many areas were added. Roundabout has been added and car park was replaced.
Looking at the maps in more detail, in 2007, there was a hospital road in the south side and a city road was in the front of hospital road. A ring road on the back of the hospital. These three roads were on the same place in 2010. There was a parking for both hospital staff and public beside the hospital road. Staff car parking was on the same place, while public car parking has been added on east side.
What is more, bus stop has been replaced by roundabout which was on the east side. In 2010, the bus station has been added thje other side of the hospital road, in the west side.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main period of change and include several relevant features: the roads remain in place, the shared car park becomes staff-only, a public car park is added, and bus stops are replaced by a bus station. The overview also notes the addition of a roundabout, although it would be more accurate to say two roundabouts were added, at the Ring Road and City Road junctions. Some details are unclear or inaccurate: the bus stops were not replaced by a roundabout on the east side; they disappeared, while roundabouts were built at both ends of Hospital Road. The bus station is west of Hospital Road. A clearer overview and more precise comparisons would make the key changes more fully reported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing details. This gives the reader a coherent overall route through the information, and phrases such as “Looking at the maps in more detail” and “What is more” signal progression. However, some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For example, “These three roads were on the same place in 2010” follows a fragmentary description, and “What is more” introduces a change that is not clearly connected to the previous comparison. Grouping the changes more systematically—roads and roundabouts, then parking and bus facilities—and using clearer references would improve the flow and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “Ring Road,” “Hospital Road,” “car parking,” “bus station,” and “roundabout,” so the main features are generally identifiable. There are also attempts at paraphrase, such as “changes in the access of road.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “access of road” is not a natural description, “in the front of” is imprecise for a map, and “bus stop has been replaced by roundabout” mislabels the change. Spelling errors such as “cleary” and “thje” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise map language, for example “to the south of,” “on the western side,” and “was converted into,” while checking spelling and singular/plural forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, and the reader can usually understand the comparisons. However, grammatical control is uneven, with errors in sentence construction, articles, and verb forms. “A ring road on the back of the hospital” is a sentence fragment, while “A staff car parking was on the same place” has an incorrect article and preposition. In “public car parking has been added,” the tense does not match the past time period being described; use “was added.” The sentence “These three roads were on the same place in 2010” also needs “in the same places” or a more precise construction. Build complete sentences and check articles, prepositions, and past-tense consistency.
