IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given two maps illustrates road accessibility to a city hospital in the years 2007 and 2010.
Overall, the road chain is improved. Separate Public and Staff parking is built. Bus station is built and the road sides bus stops are removed.
The year 2007, city hospital, is accessible through ring road from all sides. It is connected to the north of city road , which connects to hospital road. On hospital road, we can see bus tops on Eastern and Western sides of the road. On eastern side of the hospital road , we can see a single car park for public and staff.
The year 2010 maps shows a more complex chain of roads. Two roundabouts are built to the north and south end of hospital road. Public car parking is built to the eastern side of the hospital. Staff car parking is separated and built on the hospital road eastern side. Bus stops are removed and Bus station is built on the western side of hospital road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main changes between the maps: the shared car park becomes separate staff and public facilities, the bus stops are replaced by a bus station, and two roundabouts are added. The overview also recognises that access was reorganised, and most locations are reported accurately. However, some details are unclear or imprecise. In 2007, the hospital is bordered by the Ring Road on its north, west and east sides; saying it is accessible “from all sides” overstates this. The description of the connection between City Road and Hospital Road is also confusing. In 2010, the public car park is east of the Ring Road, rather than simply east of the hospital. More precise comparisons and clearer explanation of the road layout would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by separate descriptions of 2007 and 2010. This makes the main chronological comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall” and “The year 2010” help signal the stages. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes abrupt, and the relationship between roads and facilities is not always clear. For example, the sentence about the hospital being “connected to the north of city road” is difficult to interpret, while the repeated use of “On… side” gives the description a list-like quality. Use more precise linking and location phrases, and connect each change directly to its corresponding earlier feature. This would make cohesion less mechanical and the map comparison more fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “roundabouts,” “car park,” “bus station,” and “eastern and western sides,” so the reader can identify the main features. There is also some attempt to vary wording, such as “separated” and “removed.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task: “road chain” is not a suitable description of the access layout, “bus tops” appears to be a mistaken form, and “car parking” is less precise than “car park” when naming a mapped facility. Repetition of “built” also limits flexibility. Aim for accurate collocations such as “was added,” “was converted into,” and “was located,” while keeping directional descriptions exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple statements and some longer structures, and the meaning is generally recoverable. However, errors in agreement, articles, tense and sentence construction are noticeable. The opening says “maps illustrates,” where the plural subject requires “illustrate.” “The year 2007, city hospital, is accessible” is not a well-formed sentence, and “The year 2010 maps shows” has both agreement and sentence-structure problems. Articles are also missing in phrases such as “on eastern side” and “on western side.” Punctuation spacing is inconsistent, with spaces before commas in several places. Practise forming accurate comparative sentences in the past tense, for example, “In 2010, two roundabouts were added at the ends of Hospital Road.”
