The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The two maps below show the city hospital in 2007 and after a major redevelopement project in 2010.
Lets take a start by having a look on the map of 2007, on the west of bus stop city hospital is located right in the center of ring road, to arrive you have to take a right from city road to hospital road on your right you have car parking space for both staff and public, and the gate of hospital is right in front.
There are some major changes if we have a look on the map of 2010 the bus stop is relocated from the east of hospital to the left side of hospital road and parkings are divided opposite the bus station there is car park for staff and on the right of ring road there is car park for public, we have three roundabouts and the hospital is still located in the center of ring road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad change from the 2007 layout to the redeveloped 2010 arrangement, including the separation of staff and public parking and the removal or relocation of bus facilities. However, the account is only partly complete and some details are inaccurate: the 2010 map shows two roundabouts, not “three,” and the bus stops were replaced by a bus station west of Hospital Road rather than simply relocated to the left side. The overview is also unclear; saying the hospital remains “in the center of ring road” does not summarise the main access changes. To strengthen the report, give a concise overview and accurately describe the new roundabouts, bus station, and public car park’s access from Ring Road.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable sequence: it first describes 2007 and then introduces the 2010 changes with “There are some major changes.” This gives the reader a basic overall progression, and the comparison between the two maps is relevant. However, each map is largely compressed into one long sentence, so several details run together and relationships become difficult to follow. For example, the 2010 sentence combines the bus facility, both car parks, and roundabouts without clearly separating their locations or access routes. Use distinct paragraphs for the overview and each map, and organise details by road or facility. More precise linking and reference would also help clarify what “left side” and “opposite” refer to.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “redevelopment project,” “relocated,” “divided,” “car park,” and “roundabouts,” which allows the reader to understand the general subject. Some choices are imprecise or informal for a map report: “Lets take a start by having a look” is conversational, while “parkings” is not the natural noun here. “Bus stop” also does not accurately name the 2010 facility, which is a bus station. Spelling errors such as “redevelopement” and “car parking space” used where “car park” is intended reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, standard map-description language and use the labels shown on the maps consistently, such as “staff car park” and “public car park.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts longer sentences and some complex structures, but control is limited, and errors sometimes make the relationships between features unclear. For instance, “on the west of bus stop city hospital is located” has an unclear word order, and “on your right you have car parking space” shifts into direct address rather than maintaining a report style. The long 2010 sentence joins several independent ideas with commas, creating a run-on structure. There are also errors in articles and sentence boundaries, as in “the gate of hospital,” and the opening “Lets take a start” is not grammatically well formed. Use shorter, complete sentences and practise accurate location patterns, such as “The car park was east of Hospital Road” and “A bus station was built to the west.”
