Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The maps illustrate the changes that have taken place in City hospital between 2007 and 2010
Overall, the area became far more developed, with bus station and public car parking, while staff car parking and City hospital remained unchanged.
In 2007 city road connected with hospital road and ring road was surrounded to the hospital. Car parking which used public and staff located to the beside of city hospital. By 2010, this had been replaced in different location like public car parking had located in the opposite of city hospital and staff car parking on same position.
In addition, bus station was constructed in the south-west of the Hospital road and this road was to connect city road with the city hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the broad change over time and include relevant features such as the new bus station and the separation of staff and public parking. However, the overview is only partly accurate: the hospital itself remains, but the road layout changes through the addition of two roundabouts, which you do not mention. Some locations are also unclear or incorrect. The public car park is east of the Ring Road, not simply “in the opposite of city hospital,” and the bus station is west of Hospital Road rather than specifically in its south-west. The response is also below the required 150 words, limiting the detail available. To strengthen the report, describe the roundabouts, removal of the bus stops, and the new access arrangements, using precise comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the earlier and later layouts. The time sequence is generally easy to follow, and “Overall” and “By 2010” help signal the main stages. However, the body is very brief, so several changes are compressed into sentences that are difficult to interpret, particularly “this had been replaced in different location.” The reference to “this road” in the final sentence is also unclear. Develop the comparison in a more orderly way—for example, describe the road changes first, then parking and bus facilities—and use clear references such as “the former shared car park” and “the new bus station.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “connected,” “surrounded,” “constructed,” and “car parking,” and the reader can identify the main subject of each sentence. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which makes locations and changes less precise. For example, “located to the beside” and “in the opposite of” do not express the intended spatial relationships naturally, while “car parking” is less precise than “car park” for the labelled facilities. Repetition of “road” and “car parking” also restricts flexibility. Practise standard map phrases such as “to the east of,” “on the same site,” and “was replaced by,” and use the labels consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview clause beginning “while” and the time contrast introduced by “By 2010.” However, grammatical errors occur throughout and sometimes make relationships difficult to follow. Examples include “the area became far more developed, with bus station,” which needs an article, and “public car parking had located,” where the passive form should be used. In “Car parking which used public and staff located,” the clause structure and verb forms are incomplete. There are also inconsistent capitalisation choices for “City Hospital” and “City Road.” Build accuracy by using clear passive constructions such as “was converted into” and checking articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries.
