Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the two years and mention relevant features such as the Ring Road, parking and the bus station, so the response is partly focused on the maps. However, the main changes are not clearly or accurately reported: the 2007 bus stops are described only as there being no bus station, and the 2010 roundabouts and the removal of the individual stops are omitted. The maps show changes to road access and facilities, not that the hospital buildings are old, new or different in size; these claims are unsupported. The overview is therefore vague, and several details are repeated rather than developed. To improve, summarise the key changes accurately and compare the two layouts, including the separate staff and public car parks and the new bus station.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure: an opening, a general statement, and paragraphs introduced by “First of all” and “Secondly.” This gives the reader some indication that the two years will be discussed separately. However, there is little progression within the paragraphs, and ideas are repeatedly restated—for example, that the 2010 hospital is “very different” and that there was no bus station in 2007. Frequent sentence fragments beginning with “and” or “the” make the connections between points unclear. Organise the response around an overview followed by a clear comparison of the main changes, and use linking words only where they show a genuine relationship between details.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “Ring Road,” “car park,” “staff,” “public” and “bus station,” which helps identify the subject. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, especially “very different” and “buliding.” Some word combinations are unclear or unsuitable for describing a map, such as “parking attached the hospital” and “big building in the city.” The spelling error “buliding” also recurs. Use precise terms for location and change, such as “to the east of,” “accessed from,” “was replaced by” and “was designated as.” This would make the description clearer and more appropriate to an academic map report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
Most sentences use simple patterns, and errors occur frequently enough to make some relationships difficult to follow. For example, “The city hospital 2007 and city hospital 2010 is very different” has problems with article use and subject–verb agreement, while “the public car parking attached the hospital” lacks a grammatical link between the subject and its location. Sentence boundaries and capitalisation are also inconsistent, as in “2007. and explain” and “the Ring Road. the car park.” The response shows little variety in sentence structure, and attempts to join ideas with “and” often produce fragments. Practise complete comparative sentences, such as “In 2010, the bus stops were replaced by a bus station,” with accurate articles and verb forms.
