IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The two maps show the road which reach to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

The staff car park place remains same and all other things are altered. The car park place is separated for public and staff in 2010.

Firstly, in 2007, when we move towards hospital road, on the left side there is a city road and on the front it is a hospital road. On the right side of hospital road, there is a car park place for staff and public. The hospital is covered with ring road on the east side of city hospital, it is a bus stop for passengers.

In 2010, there is a huge contradiction than 2007. When enter in a city road there is a roundabout which is new and then enter to a hospital road on the right side, there is a parking area for only staff and on the left side, it is a bus station, it moves from east to west. On the the front of the road, there is also a roundabout and both round about cut towards bus station. On the back side of city hospital, there is a ring road and on the east side, there is a place for public car park.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main change: the former shared car park becomes staff-only, while a separate public car park is added, and you note the new roundabouts and bus station. These are relevant features, and your opening attempts an overview. However, some locations are misreported or unclear: in 2007 the hospital is surrounded by the Ring Road on its north, west and east sides, not simply on the east; the bus stops are on both sides of Hospital Road. In 2010, the bus station is west of Hospital Road, and the public car park is east of the Ring Road. The overview that “all other things are altered” is too broad and does not clearly summarise the key changes. More precise comparisons would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic chronological structure, moving from 2007 to 2010, and uses paragraph breaks to separate the maps. This gives the reader some sense of organisation. However, progression within paragraphs is difficult to follow because directions and features are sometimes combined without clear relationships. For example, “when we move towards hospital road, on the left side there is a city road and on the front it is a hospital road” does not establish a clear viewpoint, while “both round about cut towards bus station” leaves the connection unclear. Linking phrases such as “In 2010” help, but “Firstly” and repeated “on the … side” do not create a consistent comparison. Group features by location and use clear references to the roads and map directions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “car park,” “roundabout,” “Ring Road” and “bus station,” so the reader can recognise many of the mapped features. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or unnatural, which sometimes makes the description hard to interpret. “Huge contradiction” does not describe a map change; “significant change” would be more suitable. “The car park place” is repeated instead of using “car park,” and “it moves from east to west” is unclear when describing the bus station. Aim for precise location language and natural collocations, such as “is located west of Hospital Road” and “is accessed from the Ring Road.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and the reader can understand the broad comparison. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some relationships unclear. Examples include “The two maps show the road which reach,” where the verb does not agree with its subject, and “The staff car park place remains same,” which is missing an article and has an awkward sentence structure. The sentence beginning “When enter in a city road” also lacks a clear subject and uses an incomplete verb pattern. Articles, prepositions and sentence boundaries need attention; “on the the front” also contains a repeated article. Practise accurate location sentences before combining them into longer structures.
