IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps demonstrate the access to a city hopital by road in two different years 2007 and 2010.

Overall, in past hospital had simple infrastructure around it while updated through some renovation and addition of sections around hospital.

In 2007, a ring road passed around the whole hospital and work as a access to every corner of it. Also a seperate hospital road comes from the main city road which connected with ring road and had multiple bus stations on the west and east sides. There was a parking at south east corner of ring road for both staff and visitors.

In 2010, they upgraded the hospital road as it now contains two roundabouts on initial and ending side. A seperate bus station built which connects to both roundabouts to use for local public and visitors both. There is a renovation in parking also as a seperate public parking built at the west side of the ring road while staff parking remain same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main change from the 2007 layout to 2010: the addition of two roundabouts and a bus station, alongside changes to parking. The overview also contrasts the earlier, simpler arrangement with later development. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. The 2007 bus facilities were individual bus stops, not “bus stations,” and the new public car park was on the east side of Ring Road, not the west. The original shared car park was east of Hospital Road; in 2010 it became the staff car park, while the public car park was added separately. Your account covers the key changes, but these location errors and the limited description of how the bus station connects to the road network reduce precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised into an introduction, an overall summary, and separate paragraphs for 2007 and 2010. This gives the reader a clear chronological route through the maps, and phrases such as “In 2007” and “In 2010” make the comparisons easy to follow. The overall progression is coherent, with the main developments grouped in the final paragraph. To make the organisation more effective, clarify relationships between features rather than relying mainly on lists. For example, explain that the bus station lies west of Hospital Road and connects to both roundabouts. Some linking is also awkward in “while staff parking remain same,” which makes the final comparison less clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “ring road,” “roundabouts,” “bus station,” and “parking,” and you attempt more specific expressions such as “initial and ending side.” However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “bus stations” should refer to the individual 2007 stops as “bus stops,” and “renovation in parking” does not clearly describe the change in parking provision. “Work as a access” and “a parking” also show imprecise phrasing, while “hopital” and “seperate” are spelling errors. Aim for precise, conventional map language and check spelling; this will make your descriptions clearer without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple statements and longer clauses, including “which connected with ring road” and “as it now contains two roundabouts,” so there is some structural variety. The main meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “a ring road … work” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “staff parking remain same” needs an appropriate verb form and article. Articles and sentence construction are also problematic in “a access” and “There was a parking.” The final sentence joins several ideas without clear grammatical links. Review agreement, articles, and past-tense forms, and use shorter, accurately controlled sentences when describing several changes.
