Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two maps illustrate the changes made to the road access and parking facilities of a city hospital between 2007and 2010

Overall, it can be seen that the main changes were the construction of a bus station, separate parking areas for both staff and the public and the introduction of two roundabouts.

To commence with, In 2007, the city hospital was surrrounded by a ring road, while hospital road connected the main entrance to city road in the south. there were several bus stops located along both sides of hospital road. In addition a single car park was provided for both staff and the public situated to the east of hospital road.

furthermore, it is clear that by 2010 the road system had been considerably developed.two roundabouts were constructed. one at the junction of hospital road and city road and another near the hospital entrance. What is more the previous bus stops were replaced by a dedicated bus station on the western side of the hospital road.Morever, the original shared car park was divided into two separate facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response identifies the main transformation clearly: a bus station replaces the individual stops, parking is separated, and two roundabouts are added. It also gives a useful comparison with the 2007 layout, including the shared car park east of Hospital Road and the road linking the hospital area to City Road. These details address the task and are generally accurate. However, the description of the 2010 parking changes is not fully specific: it says the original car park was divided, but does not explain that the existing eastern car park became staff-only and a new public car park was added east of Ring Road. The roundabout locations are also described imprecisely; one is at the Ring Road junction, not near the hospital entrance. More precise reporting would strengthen the account.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an overview is followed by the 2007 arrangement and then the 2010 changes. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In addition,” and “What is more” help connect the points. The paragraphing also separates the overview from the detailed description. Some transitions are less effective because “To commence with” and “furthermore” do not always signal the relationship between the information as precisely as they could, and the final paragraph combines several changes without clearly distinguishing the road alterations from the parking changes. Use consistent paragraph openings and group related features together to make the progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

There is a suitable range of vocabulary for describing map changes, including “construction,” “dedicated bus station,” “separate parking areas,” and “divided into two separate facilities.” These choices show some flexibility and help convey the main developments. A few expressions are imprecise or less natural for this task: “near the hospital entrance” does not accurately locate the northern roundabout, while “the main entrance” is not established by the map. Spelling slips such as “surrrounded” and “Morever” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise location language and check spelling carefully; for example, distinguish the Ring Road junction from the hospital itself and name the new public car park’s position directly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the contrast in “the city hospital was surrounded by a ring road, while hospital road connected…” and the passive construction “two roundabouts were constructed.” Meaning remains clear overall. However, some errors in sentence boundaries, capitalization, spacing, and punctuation are present. For example, “In 2007” follows a lowercase “to commence with,” and “developed.two roundabouts” needs a space and clearer sentence punctuation. The opening also has “2007and 2010,” and several sentences begin with lowercase words after full stops. Review sentence boundaries and capitalization, and proofread spacing and punctuation so the range of structures is presented more accurately.
