Student answer (Band 5.5)

The maps illustrate the changes of road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the road access was quite simple in 2007 but in 2010 there are some extra features were added such as a bus station and roundabout road and bus stops were removed.

In 2007, the city road was ran west-east and located south side of the map. The hospital road situated center of the map and six bus stops placed on both side of the road. In the east side of the map a parking was held which was dedicated for staff and pulbic. the hospital located north side of the map and a ring road surrunded the hospital.

In 2010, the old parking dedicated only for staff and a new parking placed on the east side of the hospital. The bus stops were removed and a bus station was newly placed in the west side of the hospital road and two roundabout roads conneted the station with city road and hospital road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main change over time and provide a relevant overview: the 2010 layout adds a bus station and roundabouts, while the individual bus stops disappear. You also report the shared road arrangement and the change from a combined car park to separate staff and public parking. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate. The new public car park is on the east side of the Ring Road, not simply “on the east side of the hospital,” and the roundabouts are at the Ring Road and City Road junctions with Hospital Road; they do not connect the bus station to those roads. The overview is useful, but more precise descriptions of the new access arrangements would make the comparison more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for 2007 and 2010. This makes the chronological comparison easy to follow, and the repeated time markers help orient the reader. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes abrupt, and several details are compressed into long sequences, particularly the 2007 description. The overview’s phrase “there are some extra features were added” also interrupts the flow, while the final sentence combines the bus station and roundabouts in a way that obscures their locations. Use clearer links such as “By contrast” and “In addition,” and organise each year’s features in a consistent order, for example roads, parking, then bus facilities.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “Ring Road,” “Hospital Road,” “bus stops,” and “staff,” so the reader can identify the main features. There is also an attempt to describe change with “removed,” “newly placed,” and “dedicated.” However, several word choices and collocations are imprecise or unnatural: “a parking was held,” “roundabout road,” and “the city road was ran” do not describe the map clearly. Spelling errors such as “pulbic,” “surrunded,” and “conneted” also reduce accuracy. Aim for standard map-reporting phrases such as “was located,” “was converted into,” and “was added,” and check spelling carefully. More precise location language would also strengthen the description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, and the main time sequence is generally understandable. However, errors in verb forms, sentence construction, articles, and agreement are frequent enough to limit accuracy. For example, “the city road was ran” uses an incorrect verb form, while “the hospital road situated center” is missing a verb and article. In “there are some extra features were added,” two verb structures are incorrectly combined. The sentence beginning “In the east side…” also shifts into a fragment-like construction before “the hospital located.” Practise complete clauses with accurate past-tense forms, such as “Hospital Road was situated in the centre,” and check articles and prepositions when describing locations.
