IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The maps illustrated the changes of road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010. These maps show a dramatic modernized road while there are propities that were removed and added.

Overall, in the early year, we can go to the city hospital by walking straight from city road then right where there are several bus stop. The position of hospital roads is in between these bus stops from left and right side. Then walking straight from there, there is a ring road and the center of it was the city hospital.

However in 2010, the road access to the city hospitals is highly renovated. Before, if we walk ahead from city road, it immidiately connects to the hospital road and there are multiples bus stop. Right now, there are two roundabout between hospital road and the bus station is on the left side from hospital road while on the right side, there are staff car park. Lastly, they added public car park which connects from right side of ring road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main change from the 2007 layout to the more developed 2010 access system, including the roundabouts, bus station, and separate staff and public parking. The overview that access was “highly renovated” is relevant, but the description is not consistently accurate: in 2007 the hospital is beside the Ring Road, rather than “the center of it,” and the bus stops are on both sides of Hospital Road, not simply part of a walking route. The 2010 account also omits the new public car park’s position east of the Ring Road and does not clearly explain that the former shared car park became staff-only. Select the key changes and describe their locations precisely to make the comparison more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction and overview to separate descriptions of the two years. Time markers such as “in the early year” and “in 2010” help the reader follow the comparison. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes unclear because the account is framed as directions for walking rather than a systematic comparison of map features. Phrases such as “Then walking straight from there” and “Right now” make the sequence harder to follow, and “However” does not clearly signal the relationship between the two layouts. Organise the details by major changes—road junctions, bus facilities, and car parks—and use clear references to each year.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “roundabout,” “bus station,” “staff car park,” and “connects,” so the reader can identify several important features. However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “dramatic modernized road,” “propities,” and “highly renovated” for describing changes to road access. “Walking straight” is also not an appropriate way to report a map layout, while “multiples bus stop” shows problems with word form and number. Aim for precise terms such as “layout,” “was converted into,” “was added,” and “located to the west/east of.” Check spelling and collocations so that the map description sounds factual and concise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the use of time clauses helps distinguish the two maps. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in longer constructions. For example, “The position of hospital roads is in between these bus stops from left and right side” has unclear sentence structure and missing articles, while “there are two roundabout” has a number-agreement error. The opening sentence also uses an awkward construction, “illustrated the changes of road access,” and the shift between “we can go” and “if we walk” makes the description less controlled. Practise accurate plural forms, articles, and prepositions, and use direct map-reporting sentences such as “In 2010, two roundabouts were added to Hospital Road.”
