IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The map shown under shows the road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
In general, it can be clearly seen that the east side of the hospital has faced more changes. whereas the west side faced minor changes.
Looking at the map for more detail, there was a bus stop on the east side of the hospital which had demolished in 2010 and it shifted to the west side of the hospital. moreover, there was a combined car parking for pubic and staff which then changed to separate car parking in the east side of the hospital.
Moreover, they also build an roundabout in south-east side of the hospital. and also to more round about is build in the center of the hospital near the bus station to the main road of the hospital.
Therefore, rest every thing is remained unchanged from 2007 to 2010. which can easily seen on the map.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the period and give an overview that changes were greater on the east side, then mention the parking changes, removal of bus stops and new roundabouts. However, some key details are inaccurate or unclear: the bus stops were removed from both sides of Hospital Road, not shifted to the west, and the 2010 map shows two roundabouts—at the Ring Road and City Road junctions—not one in the hospital centre. The public car park was added east of Ring Road, while the existing car park became staff-only. The claim that everything else remained unchanged is too broad. The response also falls five words short of the 150-word minimum, limiting the detail provided.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall structure: an introduction, a general overview and details about the changes. This gives the reader a broad route through the comparison. However, progression is uneven because several changes are grouped into long, unclear sentences, and the final statement that everything else remained unchanged does not clearly follow from the details. Linking words such as “Moreover” and “Therefore” are repeated or used where the relationship between ideas is not logical. The sentence beginning “Looking at the map for more detail” would be clearer if it separated the bus-stop changes from the parking changes. Use distinct paragraphs for the overview and the main developments, and connect each comparison explicitly to 2007 or 2010.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “road access,” “car parking,” “bus stop” and “roundabout,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the changes difficult to interpret. For example, “had demolished” does not describe the bus stops being removed, and “combined car parking” is not a natural way to describe a shared car park. “Pubic” is also a spelling error for “public.” Aim for precise terms such as “was removed,” “shared car park,” “designated as a staff car park” and “additional public car park.” Avoid repeating general phrases such as “more changes” when you can name the specific development.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer sentences and uses past-tense forms to compare the maps, but the range of sentence structures is limited and errors occur frequently. Examples include “The map shown under shows,” “which had demolished,” and “they also build,” where the verb forms or sentence construction are faulty. Articles and agreement are also problematic in “an roundabout” and “two more round about is build.” Several sentences begin with lowercase words after full stops, and punctuation around “whereas” is not controlled. These errors sometimes make the sequence of changes hard to follow. Practise accurate past passive forms—for example, “the bus stops were removed”—and check articles, plural nouns, verb agreement and sentence boundaries.
