IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The two maps illustrate the changes of the entrance of a city hospital over the period of three years.

Overall, some significant changes were done such as public and staff car park were separated, bus stop is removed, and a bus station was constructed.

In 2007, there was no car park in the eastern side of the city hospital rather there was a bus stop. Additionally, both staff and public car park were beside the hospital road. However, in 2010, they were moved. Moreover, a bus station was developed in south-western side. In the eastern side of the city hospital, there was a bus stop in 2007 but it was completely demolished in 2010. There were also made two roundabouts so that people could have access to the city hospital from everywhere. It connected the roads with city hospital area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad changes, including the separation of the staff and public car parks, the removal of the bus stops and the addition of a bus station and roundabouts. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: in 2007, the shared car park was east of Hospital Road, not absent from the eastern side, and the bus stops were on both sides of Hospital Road. The 2010 public car park was east of Ring Road, while the existing car park became staff-only. The overview is relevant but does not clearly summarise the main changes to road access. The response is also 10 words below the required minimum. Include the key locations and explain how the new roundabouts and bus-station access changed the layout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic overall structure, with an overview followed by details about the two maps, and time markers such as “In 2007” and “in 2010” help orient the reader. However, the progression is not consistently clear because several points are repeated: the removal of the eastern bus stop is mentioned twice, and the car-park changes are described vaguely as “they were moved.” Some linking words, including “Moreover” and “Additionally,” do not make the relationship between ideas precise. Organise the body around the main changes—car parks, bus facilities and road access—and use clear references to distinguish the two years. This would make the comparison easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing map changes, including “constructed,” “demolished,” “roundabouts” and “access.” This gives the response a suitable basic range, but several choices are imprecise or repetitive. For example, “changes of the entrance” does not accurately describe the wider road-access changes, and “moved” does not specify how the car parks changed. “From everywhere” is also too vague for a map description. Aim for precise location and change language, such as “to the east of,” “was redesignated as,” or “was replaced by.” More accurate collocations would help communicate the layout without requiring the reader to infer what happened.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “However” and a purpose clause beginning “so that.” Meaning is generally understandable, but errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “some significant changes were done” has an unsuitable passive construction, while “public and staff car park were separated” needs clearer article and number agreement. The sentence beginning “There were also made two roundabouts” is not formed correctly; use “Two roundabouts were also added.” There are also awkwardly joined clauses, as in “In 2007, there was no car park … rather there was a bus stop.” Practise accurate passive forms and comparison sentences while retaining varied structures.
