Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The figure compares the layouts of city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Overall, The extension of city hospital is for better management of the public and staff cars. The new layout has more facilities for the public and staff both including the parking for them. The road infrastructure got better than the previous one.New layout is more convenient for the public.

The 2007 layout of hospital had a square shaped ring road sorrounding the hospital. The public parking for both staff and other persons are in the same place, a road leading from ring road. Hospital road is on the southern side of hospital.Bus stops are on the both sides of hospital road.Following south on the hospital road lead to the city road crossing it.

The new 2010 layout got impressive and more convenient changes. The ring road sorrounding the city got a new pathway on the eastern side of the hospital leading to public car parking area.

A new roundabout in constructed on the southern side of hospital.Going straight from that roundabout we have staff car parking on the eastern side of hospital road. A bus station is built on the western side of hospital road. Another roundabout is at the bottom of layout connecting city road with bus station and hospital road both.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both years and identify the main changes: the shared car park becomes staff-only, a separate public car park is added, bus stops are replaced by a bus station, and roundabouts are introduced. Your overview also recognises that access and facilities changed, which gives the response a clear central comparison. This is why the main features are addressed. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the new public car park is accessed directly from the Ring Road, not by a new pathway leading from it, and the southern roundabout connects Hospital Road with City Road; the bus station has its own access links. The overview’s claims that the layout is “more convenient” and for “better management” are not directly demonstrated. More precise description and a fuller account of the access changes would strengthen the report further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by separate descriptions of the 2007 and 2010 layouts. This chronological grouping helps the reader compare the maps, and phrases such as “The 2007 layout” and “The new 2010 layout” make the shift between periods clear. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, with repeated references to “hospital road” and “layout,” and several sentences read as a list of features rather than a connected account. The final paragraph’s sequence of roundabouts, parking and bus station could be organised more clearly by describing the route from north to south. Improve links between related changes and use clearer referencing so that each feature’s location and connection are easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing maps, including “surrounding,” “parking area,” “bus station,” “roundabout” and “connecting,” so the reader can understand the main changes. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “road infrastructure” and “convenient.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural for an objective map report: “got impressive” is evaluative and awkward, while “new pathway” does not accurately describe the direct access to the public car park. Spelling errors such as “sorrounding” and “sorrounded” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise location and access terms, and avoid subjective judgements. A more controlled range of map-specific collocations would make the description clearer and more formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including “Following south on the hospital road lead to the city road crossing it” and “Another roundabout is at the bottom of layout connecting city road with bus station and hospital road both.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “Following south … lead” has an incorrect verb form, and “A new roundabout in constructed” uses the wrong verb form. There are also issues with articles and agreement in “The public parking for both staff and other persons are in the same place.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, including the capitalised “The” after the overview’s opening. Check subject–verb agreement, articles and verb forms, and revise longer sentences to make their relationships explicit.
