IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two maps illustrates the changes made the road system and parking facilities around city hospital between 2007 and 2010.

Overall, the hospital building and the ring road remained unchanged, while the surrounding transport facilities were significantly improved. The main changes were the construction of two roundabout, a bus station and separate car parls for staff and the public.

In 2007, Hospital Road connected thee main entrance of the hospital to city road. There were three bus stops on each side of hospital road. In addition, a large car parking is available for both staff and the public was located to the east of the road, near the hospital.

By 2010, several major developments had taken place. The six bus stops had been removed and replaced by a bus station on the western side of the hospital road. Furthemore, original car park had been divided into two seperate areas one on the east side and another in south side. Another changes was the construction of two roundabouts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview of the main transformation, noting that the hospital and ring road stayed the same while transport facilities changed. You also report several key details accurately: the six bus stops were replaced by a bus station, the former shared car park became staff-only, and two roundabouts were added. However, some locations are misreported or left unclear. The public car park was newly built east of the Ring Road, not created by dividing the original car park; the original site became the staff car park. The bus station is west of Hospital Road, and the roundabouts are at its junctions with the Ring Road and City Road. Including these precise relationships would make the account more fully supported and avoid over-generalising the changes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, a description of the 2007 layout, and then the 2010 changes. This gives the reader a logical progression through the maps, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In addition,” and “By 2010” help signal the stages. The final paragraph, however, ends rather abruptly after mentioning the roundabouts, and the relationship between the two car parks is not clearly explained. Develop the final comparison by stating where each 2010 facility is located and how it relates to the 2007 arrangement. This would strengthen the progression and make the connections between details clearer while retaining the effective paragraph structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of map-related vocabulary, including “connected,” “located,” “construction,” and “replaced,” which communicates the main changes. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “transport facilities” and “separate car parks.” However, spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “car parls,” “Furthemore,” and “seperate” are inaccurate, while “a large car parking” is an unnatural expression. “Another changes” is also an unsuitable phrase for introducing a further development. Use standard forms and established collocations for facilities and map changes, and choose precise terms such as “car park” rather than “car parking” when referring to a specific mapped area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some sentence patterns are controlled, for example, “The six bus stops had been removed and replaced by a bus station.” However, errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction remain. “The two maps illustrates” should use a plural verb, while “two roundabout” needs a plural noun. The sentence beginning “a large car parking is available” has an unclear structure and tense, and “Another changes was” contains both number and agreement problems. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and building complete, grammatically consistent sentences; this will make your range more reliable and improve accuracy.
