Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify several relevant changes, including the separation of staff and public parking, the new public car park beside Ring Road, and the replacement of bus stops with a bus station. However, the response only partially reports the maps and lacks a clear overview of the main changes. The claim that there are “3 to 4 roundabouts” in 2010 is inaccurate: the map shows two, at the junctions of Hospital Road with Ring Road and City Road. The bus station is also described unclearly as being near the hospital road; it is west of Hospital Road. The response is 115 words, below the required 150, which limits the detail provided. To improve, give a concise overview and accurately describe the key locations and road changes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response follows a broadly chronological comparison, moving from the 2007 arrangement to changes in 2010, and uses contrast markers such as “however” and “in the second picture.” This gives the reader some sense of comparison. However, the ideas are compressed into one paragraph and several are joined in a long sequence, so the progression is not always clear. For example, the final sentence combines the bus stops, the bus station, Hospital Road and Ring Road without clearly separating their relationships. Organise the answer into an introduction, an overview, and one or two detail paragraphs. Use linking phrases to signal each change, and make references such as “it” explicit so the reader can follow which feature you mean.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “car parking,” “staff and public,” “outside,” “roundabouts,” and “Ring Road,” which allows the main comparisons to be understood. However, the range is limited and some phrases are imprecise or repetitive, such as “in the first picture” and “in the second picture.” “Combine parking” is not a natural description of the shared car park, while “on the outside” does not specify the public car park’s position clearly. Use more precise location and change vocabulary, such as “to the east of,” “was converted into,” or “was added.” This would make the description more concise and accurate without requiring overly advanced words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to connect ideas using contrast and relative clauses, as in “which also connects with the ring road,” and the basic meaning is generally recoverable. However, the response relies heavily on simple sentence patterns, and errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction occur frequently. Examples include “The pictures shows,” “the bus stops is,” and “there are no roundabouts but in the second there are.” The opening also lacks a full stop, and spacing and punctuation are inconsistent. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and use a wider mix of controlled structures, such as “Whereas the 2007 map shows…, the 2010 map includes…”. Check each sentence for a clear subject, verb and punctuation.
