IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given maps illustrates the road access to a city in 2007 and 2010. Overall, similar things are changed in last 3 years, but the city hospital and ring road is unchanged. However, the parking area looks different in 2010 rather than 2007. Bus station are looks different and add roundabout in 2010.
In 2007, the city hospital area is wider and the hospital road looks conjuctive, moreover the car parking of staff and public are the same place which is East side of the hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the broad topic and note that the hospital and ring road remain unchanged, while parking and bus access change. However, the response reports only a small part of the maps and does not explain the main 2010 developments: the bus stops are replaced by a bus station, roundabouts are added at both ends of Hospital Road, and a separate public car park is created beside Ring Road while the existing car park becomes staff-only. The claim that the hospital area is “wider” is not supported by the maps. The response is also substantially below the required 150 words, leaving the comparison incomplete. To address the task more fully, describe the key changes in both years and give a clear overview grounded in those details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening overview is followed by a paragraph about 2007, and linking expressions such as “Overall” and “However” signal relationships between ideas. This gives the reader some sense of structure. However, the progression stops before the 2010 map is described, so the comparison is not developed across the response. Some links are also awkward or unclear, as in “Bus station are looks different and add roundabout in 2010,” where the relationship between the changes is difficult to follow. Use separate, logically ordered paragraphs for the overview, the 2007 layout, and the 2010 changes, and connect each comparison explicitly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “road access,” “parking area,” “Bus station,” and “roundabout,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the vocabulary is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “conjuctive” does not clearly describe the road layout, and “the city hospital area is wider” is not a precise map description. “Similar things are changed” is also vague. Build a more specific range for describing locations and changes, such as “is situated to the east of,” “was replaced by,” and “a separate public car park was added.” Check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, including a contrast introduced by “However” and a sentence beginning “In 2007.” Nevertheless, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make several sentences difficult to read. In “The given maps illustrates,” the plural subject requires a plural verb; “Bus station are looks different” has problems with both agreement and verb construction. The phrase “similar things are changed in last 3 years” also has faulty tense and article use. Aim first for accurate, clear sentences using past simple to describe the maps, then add controlled complex structures with “while” or “whereas” to compare the two years.
