IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps compares how city hospital accessible using road in 2007 and 2010.
Overall, there are significant changes in the layout of road to get to city hospital with addition of roundabouts and seperate public car park and bus station.
In 2007, the road to get city hospital were much easier. From south of city road straight to hospital road there were six bus stops. When taking the ring road that go around the city hospital and have space to get into car park for staff and public to the east side of hospital road.
In 2010, there is several development in the road to hospital. The major two roundabouts are added between the city and hospital road. There is separate bus station is added which connects to both roundabouts. Now there are two separate parking area - for staff the area remained the same while for public new space was added in ring road to the east side of city hospital.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response identifies the main transformation: the addition of two roundabouts, a bus station, and separate staff and public parking, and it gives a clear overall summary. Most details match the maps, including the bus station’s links to both roundabouts and the new public car park east of the Ring Road. However, some descriptions are imprecise: the roundabouts are at the Ring Road–Hospital Road and City Road–Hospital Road junctions, rather than simply “between the city and hospital road.” The claim that the 2007 route was “much easier” is an unsupported evaluation, and the public car park’s direct access from the Ring Road is not clearly reported. More precise location comparisons and a fuller account of the key changes would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear four-part structure: introduction, overview, and separate descriptions of 2007 and 2010. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and time markers such as “In 2007” and “In 2010” provide a basic progression. The overview also usefully previews the main changes. However, some links between ideas are awkward or incomplete, particularly “When taking the ring road…” and “Now there are two separate parking area,” which make the relationships between features less clear. The 2007 paragraph also moves from the route to the bus stops and then to the car park without clearly explaining their positions. Use complete, logically connected sentences and clearer spatial references to make cohesion more natural and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant vocabulary for describing map changes, including “addition,” “roundabouts,” “separate,” “connects,” and “remained the same.” These choices communicate the broad changes, and the writer attempts to vary wording rather than simply repeat the map labels. However, several noticeable word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision, such as “road to get to city hospital,” “space to get into car park,” and “public new space was added.” “Major two roundabouts” is also an unnatural phrase. Spelling errors such as “seperate” and “development” used where “developments” is intended further weaken control. Aim for standard map-description phrases and check spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more developed sentence forms, and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, grammatical control is uneven, with errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “The maps compares” should use a plural verb, while “there is several development” has a mismatch between the subject and verb. The sentence beginning “When taking the ring road” is a fragment, and “From south of city road straight to hospital road there were six bus stops” lacks a clear grammatical structure. The final paragraph also contains a run-on construction around “two separate parking area.” Practise building complete sentences with accurate articles and agreement, then use a wider range of structures without losing control.
