IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The maps illustrate that road access was developed for a city hospital from 2007 to 2010.
Overall, there were some radical changes that occurred over the period of time. The area of the hospital expanded little over time; however, it had some new infrastructure built and replaced.
In 2007, the city hospital had a ring road covering the whole hospital, and the hospital road was in the south part of the hospital, surrounded by six bus stops, and the car park for staff and public was in the east part of the hospital road with an entrance to the hospital. The south side of the map covered the city road, which connected with the hospital road.
In 2010, no changes occurred in the hospital structur, the ring road, and city road, however, roundabout was added in the connection between hospital and hospital road, and citiy road and hospital road. new car park for public was in east corner of the hospital. stuff car park was in its

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the overall period of development and mention several key changes, including the two roundabouts, the new public car park and the separation of staff and public parking. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the ring road does not cover the whole hospital, and the 2010 public car park is on the east side of the ring road, not simply in the hospital’s “east corner.” The overview also says the hospital area expanded, although the maps show no clear expansion. The final sentence breaks off before explaining where the staff car park is, and the removal of the six bus stops and their replacement by a bus station is not reported. More precise comparisons and a complete account of the bus changes would make the summary more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for 2007 and 2010. This makes the time sequence easy to follow, and phrases such as “In 2007” and “In 2010” help signal the comparison. However, cohesion becomes less effective in the final paragraph: the long sentence beginning “In 2010” joins several changes with “however,” and the last phrase, “stuff car park was in its,” is incomplete, leaving the information unfinished. Some references, such as “the hospital road” and “the east part of the hospital road,” are also not fully clear. Use shorter sentences to group related changes and ensure each paragraph ends with a complete idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “ring road,” “bus stops,” “car park,” “roundabout” and “connected,” so the reader can identify the main features being described. There is also an attempt to vary wording with “infrastructure” and “radical changes.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing maps: “covering the whole hospital” and “the area of the hospital expanded little” do not accurately express the layout, while “car park … with an entrance to the hospital” confuses access to the road with access to the hospital. Spelling errors such as “structur,” “citiy” and “stuff” are noticeable, and “stuff” changes the intended meaning of staff. Aim for precise location phrases and check spelling of key labels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “however” and a relative clause in “which connected with the hospital road.” Some sentence patterns communicate the broad timeline successfully. However, errors are frequent enough to make parts of the description difficult to follow. For example, “roundabout was added” needs an article, and “no changes occurred in the hospital structur, the ring road, and city road, however” has faulty punctuation and an unclear sentence structure. The final clause, “stuff car park was in its,” is incomplete, while “the hospital road was in the south part … surrounded by six bus stops” creates an unclear modifier. Practise accurate articles, complete clauses, and punctuation when joining contrasting ideas.
