IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons wherever relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given map illustrates about the construction of roads near a city hospital in 2010 from its previous structure initiated in 2007. Overall, the picture shows that the reshaped road structure in 2010, made the hospital more reachable and benificial for its users.
In 2007, bus stops were on the both side of the hospital road. The staff and public bus stops were altogether on the east of the road.
In 2010, the introduction of two roundabouts at two ends of the previous hospital road had totally modified the area's view. A wider bus station was introduced to the west of that road. The development plan also included the relocation of public car park on the east of the hospital building. The staff car parking was modified on the same place where it was before.
However, the most significant part of this redevelopmental feature was the construction of two roundabouts linking the city road, hospital road and ring road.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main changes between the maps: the bus stops are replaced by a bus station, two roundabouts are added, and parking is reorganised. The overview also recognises that the road layout was altered to improve access. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear. In 2007, the car park was for staff and the public; the bus stops were on both sides of Hospital Road, not “staff and public bus stops.” In 2010, the public car park is newly located east of Ring Road, rather than simply relocated east of the hospital building. The final sentence repeats the roundabout change without explaining the bus station’s connections. More precise comparisons and a fuller account of the new access arrangements would make the report more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by descriptions of the two years, with a final sentence highlighting the roundabouts. This gives the reader a generally coherent account. However, the progression is not always smooth. The paragraph beginning “In 2007” moves from bus stops to a confusing reference to “staff and public bus stops,” while the 2010 paragraph combines several changes without clearly distinguishing the new public car park from the existing staff car park. “However” in the final paragraph does not express a clear contrast, and the sentence largely repeats information already given. Grouping changes by feature—road access, bus facilities, and parking—and using clearer references would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “roundabouts,” “relocation,” “redevelopment,” and “construction,” and the main changes are generally understandable. Some less common choices are inaccurate or unnatural, however. “Beneficial” is misspelled as “benificial,” “redevelopmental feature” is not a natural expression, and “the area's view” does not clearly describe a change to the layout. “Wider bus station” is also imprecise, as the map shows a bus station but does not establish that it is wider. Prefer precise map language such as “layout,” “was replaced by,” and “was designated as.” These adjustments would make your descriptions more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of your meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors are noticeable. The opening phrase “illustrates about the construction” uses an unnecessary preposition, and “from its previous structure initiated in 2007” creates an unclear relationship between the maps. In “bus stops were on the both side,” the article and plural form are incorrect; “on both sides” is the appropriate construction. The sentence “the reshaped road structure in 2010, made…” also has an unnecessary comma separating the subject from its verb. Review articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, and use direct comparisons such as “By 2010, the road layout had changed.”
