Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, it is highly believed that the speaking a foreign language while living abroad can cause various challenges. I largely agree with this statement as it would lead to misunderstanding and cause legal obligations.

While living abroad a person have to speak in a foreign language in order to communicate with the people. If a person in not able to speak or understand a language properly so, it would create a huge misunderstanding which could lead to conflicts among the individuals. Additionally, sometimes the native people try to bully foreigners by teaching them abusive words in their language which also results in various consequences.

Moving further, it could also lead to various legal obligations. As the person is not able to understand the language so, the individual would not be able to understand the signs and rules of the country. Further, by mistake if the individual does something which is against the law then they would have to pay the penalties. As, i am from India and i do not understand arabic language so it has become difficult for me to understand the signs on the roads and i have paid penalty for the same thing.

However, nowadays the english language is considered all over the world and almost every person is able to speak and understand this language. Although, if the person is not able to understand the native language they can communicate in english which is much easier for them and would help them to resolve the issue easily.

To conclude, it can be said that english could be used as alternative to communicate effectively but, speaking foreign language without proper knowledge could create conflicts and legal obligations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both social and practical problems. The position is clear throughout, and the ideas are relevant. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'legal obligations' is supported by a personal anecdote, but the explanation of 'social problems' remains a bit superficial. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the implications of these challenges with more detailed reasoning or broader examples. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, but the overall development of the argument could be more sophisticated to fully satisfy the requirements of a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Additionally', 'Moving further', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical or repetitive. For example, the use of 'Moving further' to start a paragraph is slightly unnatural. Additionally, the referencing within sentences could be smoother; at times, the connection between ideas feels a bit disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next will help improve the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'legal obligations', 'penalties', and 'communicate'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'highly believed' or 'native people' (where 'locals' or 'native speakers' would be more precise). There is also a lack of less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions that would demonstrate a higher level of control. Focusing on learning collocations and more precise academic vocabulary will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('a person have to', 'a person in not able'), article misuse ('the english language'), and punctuation errors, particularly with comma placement before 'so' or 'but'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Increasing your use of error-free complex sentences will also significantly boost your score.
