Student answer (Band 7.5)

I strongly agree that living in a country that requires knowledge of a foreign language ought to cause a multitude of social problems, as well as practical ones.

Living in an unfamiliar country is quite stressful to begin with, as mere visual differences and difficulties adjusting to new standards can make you stand out when all you want is to fit it. Add on linguistic difficulties, and you'll definitely be very pressured and burdened. It isn't easy to speak a language you weren't particularly brought up on. Languages differ immensely, from alphabets to tones and accents, it requires immense dedication in order to master just one language.

Hence, people may face great difficulties communicating with natives around them. It will be quite the struggle trying to make friends or merely kickstarting small talk with your colleague, as you lack the linguistic and contextual knowledge to truly understand their deep-rooted dialects and accents, which may differ significantly from the standard version of the language. You will find yourself isolated, as no one dares to put up with the struggles of the situation. Subsequently, practical issues will follow, as you will find conversing with cashiers and storeowners just as difficult, if not more. It'll be immensely challenging to live with such trepidation and troubles.

In conclusion, I truly believe the given statement upholds a considerate amount of truth, as languages are quite complex by nature, and it will be hard living your entire lifetime in a country you struggle to understand the language of. The social and practical issues that follow will result in great discomfort.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both social and practical problems associated with living in a foreign-language environment. The position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention 'linguistic difficulties' and 'isolation', the arguments remain at a general level. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or deeper analysis of how these problems manifest in real-world scenarios, such as the impact on employment opportunities or access to essential public services. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, but the overall depth of the argument is more characteristic of a Band 6.5 or 7.0 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Hence', 'Subsequently', and 'In conclusion' to link your thoughts. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. For instance, the transition between the discussion of social isolation and practical issues could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would help elevate the coherence and cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'deep-rooted dialects', 'linguistic and contextual knowledge', and 'trepidation' show an attempt to use more sophisticated language. There are occasional minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'considerate amount of truth' (should be 'considerable') and 'kickstarting small talk' (which is slightly informal). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations and avoiding slightly informal phrasing would help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that communication is never impeded. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'it requires immense dedication in order to master just one language' (the subject 'it' is slightly ambiguous here) and 'the given statement upholds a considerate amount of truth' (the verb 'upholds' is not the best fit for 'truth'). Despite these minor issues, your control over grammar is generally good, and you show a decent command of punctuation and sentence variety.
