Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people believe that while living in a foreign country and speaking the country's official language instead of your own language can be the reason of several serious issues including socials problems. I completely disagree with and in this essay I will support my opinion with examples.

Firstly, if someone is moving abroad to a different country, they would typically learn that country's language first. For example, if a person is planning to move to the USA to pursue a master's degree in biosystems engineering, they would learn English beforehand, since it is the country's official language. As a result, once they move, they will not face any particular issues related to their social life. In other words, if you can speak the language fluently, you will not face any problems.

Another reason why I disagree with the idea that speaking a foreign language can cause serious social problems is that when you are in a foreign country, you mostly deal with people directly related to you. For instance, if you are working in a different country, you will mostly deal with people from the same company, which means you will not face any social problems, unless you are unable to speak the language. If you are able to communicate, you will face no significant issues.

In conclusion, I completely disagree that living in a foreign country and speaking its official language causes serious social and practical problems. This is because people who plan to move abroad typically learn the language beforehand, and those who work or study in a foreign country usually interact only with a limited circle of people, making language less of a barrier than commonly believed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. You rely heavily on the assumption that everyone learns a language perfectly before moving, which is a generalization that ignores the reality of the prompt's premise regarding 'serious social problems.' To reach a higher band, you should explore the nuance of the topic—perhaps acknowledging that while preparation helps, cultural integration remains a challenge regardless of linguistic proficiency. The arguments are relevant but lack depth and specific, real-world examples beyond hypothetical scenarios.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'In other words,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph builds upon the previous one more naturally rather than simply restating the same point about language preparation.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'biosystems engineering' and 'linguistic barrier.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a tendency to repeat words like 'problems' and 'country' frequently. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more precise synonyms and collocations. For example, instead of repeating 'social problems,' you could use 'societal integration challenges' or 'interpersonal difficulties.' The word choice is generally accurate, but it lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the reason of several serious issues' (should be 'the reason for') and 'including socials problems' (should be 'social problems'). Additionally, there is a minor error in the opening sentence structure. You use conditional sentences ('If you are able to...') effectively, which shows an attempt at complexity. To improve, focus on eliminating these small errors and increasing the variety of your sentence structures to include more sophisticated subordinate clauses.
