Student answer (Band 6.5)

Residing in a foreign country where a foreign language is spoken can cause serious social as well as practical problem. Well there are both merits and demerits living in such a country, but to an extend, the probability of getting isolated and lonely is high. So I totally agree to the sentiment.

Living in a foreign country could make a person to feel isolated. It is because as in a foreign country the culture, the order of functioning of everything from traffic to everything could be different. So in such an entirely different country, at times, there won't be much familiar people. Such that there will be an initial trouble in interacting with other peoples and sometimes they can't even understand ourselves. This takes the person into a feeling of isolation, where they don't have anyone near to them, to share and care them. This causes a social problem, where they struggle to survive.

At times, the people may avoid people from other countries. In some countries, people believe that non-citizens of their countries are harmful for the citizens and it is not ideal to be in contact with such people. For instances, If some student migrate to Australia for study purposes, some may avoid them based on their color, as part racism. This would also make the people more uncomfortable in interacting with other people thinking what they will think about us. And thus they would withdraw themselves from others leading to a lonely situation. This also make people less ease to socialize with other individuals.

Thus, living in a country where persons have to speak foreign languages can cause both social and practical issues. It could be true due to the isolation they feel there or because they are getting avoided by other people leading them into a state of loneliness.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified both social and practical issues, such as isolation and the difficulty of navigating a new culture. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the practical problems mentioned in the introduction are not fully explored in the body paragraphs, which focus primarily on social isolation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are given equal weight and that your examples are more specific and analytical rather than generalized. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, but the overall depth of the argument could be improved by providing more nuanced examples of practical challenges.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'For instances' and 'Thus', to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as the phrasing 'Such that there will be an initial trouble'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph could be smoother. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'they', 'this') is always precise to avoid ambiguity.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'non-citizens', 'migrate', and 'socialize'. However, there are instances of awkward word choices and minor errors, such as 'much familiar people' instead of 'many familiar people' and 'make people less ease' instead of 'make people less at ease'. The range is sufficient for the task, but you rely on somewhat repetitive phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations and academic synonyms would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'make a person to feel' (should be 'make a person feel'), 'there won't be much familiar people', and 'share and care them' (should be 'share with and care for them'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentence constructions are slightly unnatural. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of infinitives and prepositions. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will significantly improve your score in this criterion.
