Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this current era of scientific nd technological progress, we find ourselves in the modern world where, living in a country where i have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems. I disagree with this statement.

From my perspective, there are various viewpoints to consider. First and foremost, foreign language helps in work on an international level. Secondly, foreign language is a positive aspect in people lives for communication and online working platforms. For example, my cousin work in an office, he earn high salary as compare to other members, due to spoken foreign language. Therefore, speaking a foreign language is a greatest positive effect in our personal and social lives.

On the other hand, our courses are also in foreign language instead of our mother-tongue. When we speak a foreign language it help in understanding our course books and help in solving social problems. For example, I learn foreign language from my uncle, when I travel abroad for higher study, then it really plays an important role in understanding to other cultures of country.

In conclusion, speaking a foreign language is crucial for education, job, communication and problem solving in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you state your position clearly, the arguments provided are underdeveloped and lack depth. For instance, you mention that foreign languages help with international work and education, but these points are supported by very brief, anecdotal examples that do not fully explore the 'social and practical problems' mentioned in the prompt. To improve, you need to expand your reasoning and provide more detailed explanations for your claims to ensure the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and you use basic cohesive devices like 'First and foremost', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand' to signal transitions. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the connection between ideas could be smoother. The concluding paragraph is very brief and does not effectively summarize the main points or provide a final thought. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, well-developed topic sentence that connects back to the main argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it is somewhat repetitive and lacks the precision required for higher bands. Phrases like 'greatest positive effect' and 'modern world' are quite generic. There are also some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'my cousin work in an office' (should be 'works') and 'due to spoken foreign language' (should be 'due to his ability to speak a foreign language'). To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to linguistics, globalization, and social integration.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('my cousin work'), article usage, and awkward phrasing ('understanding to other cultures'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization and comma usage. While these errors do not completely prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to distract. You should focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed accurately.
