Student answer (Band 7.5)

Some believe that living in a country where we have to speak a foreign language which cause serious social problems and practical problems. I partly agree with this statement and I will give my opinion in following paragraphs.

One major problem of living in a foreign country is that language barriers can make both social interaction and everyday activities difficult. People who cannot communicate fluently may find it difficult to make friends, participate in conversations and understand local culture. As a result, they may feel isolated and less confident when interacting with other people. In addition, limited language skills can create problems in everyday situations such as visiting a doctor, dealing with government offices or communicating with employers. For example, a foreign resident may misunderstand important medical instructions, which could have serious consequences.

However, these social and practical problems are not necessarily permanent, as people can gradually overcome language barriers through learning and regular interaction. By attending language classes and communicating with local people on a daily basis. This can help them become more confident and develop stronger relationships with people in their new community. Furthermore, modern technology has made communication much easier for people who are not fluent in the local language. Translation applications and online language-learning resources can help foreigners understand important information. For instance, a foreign student who initially struggles to communicate with classmates may become more socially active after attending language courses and practicing the language every day.

In conclusion, living in a country where a foreign language is spoken can cause significant social and practical problems, especially for newcomers. However, I believe that these difficulties are generally temporary because people can improve their language skills and adapt to their new environment over time.

Overall7.5

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position of partial agreement. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, with the first body paragraph detailing social and practical challenges and the second providing counter-arguments regarding adaptation and technology. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific, nuanced examples rather than general scenarios, such as referencing a specific type of cultural misunderstanding or a particular digital tool, to further demonstrate depth of thought.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. The referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the variety of cohesive devices could elevate the flow further.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses relevant terms such as 'language barriers', 'social interaction', 'fluently', and 'newcomer'. While the range is adequate, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a grammatical error in the introductory sentence: 'which cause' should be 'which causes' or 'which can cause'. Additionally, the sentence 'By attending language classes and communicating with local people on a daily basis' is a sentence fragment. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the majority of sentences are error-free. The control of punctuation is generally good, and the errors do not impede the reader's understanding.
