Student answer (Band 7.0)
in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems.I mostly agree that this can create both social and practical problems, especially in the beginning.
First of the speaking a foreign language can cause practical difficulties.People may not understand important information, such as hospital instructions, government forms or transport signs. They may also find it hard to talk with doctors, teachers, or office workers. As a result, simple daily activities can become stressful. For example, an international student may have trouble opening a bank account or asking for help because of limited language skills.
language barriers can create social problems. When people cannot communicate well, they may feel lonely and isolated. They may avoid conversations and have fewer friends. In workplaces or schools, misunderstandings can happen easily. This can reduce confidence and make it difficult to become part of the local community. I have seen some students who were shy to speak English, so they spent most of their time only with people from their own country.
I do not completely agree that the problems are always serious. Many countries offer language classes, translation services, and support for newcomers. Modern technology, such as translation apps, also helps people communicate more easily. In addition, language skills usually improve with practice and time.
In conclusion I agree that living in a country where a foreign language is required can create important social and practical problems. These difficulties are often strongest at the beginning, but with support, practice, and confidence, many people can overcome them and successfully adapt to their new environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that acknowledges both the challenges and the mitigating factors. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of hospital instructions and the social isolation of international students. The argument is well-developed, moving from the practical and social difficulties to the counter-argument regarding support systems. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more depth in the analysis of how these problems specifically impact the 'social' aspect beyond just isolation, perhaps discussing cultural integration or professional advancement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as practical difficulties, social issues, and mitigating factors. Cohesive devices like 'First of all', 'As a result', and 'In addition' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text, making the argument easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses relevant topic-specific terms like 'language barriers', 'translation services', and 'mitigating factors' (implied). While the range is adequate, it lacks the sophistication and precision of higher bands. There are some repetitive structures and common word choices. To improve, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to express complex ideas more fluently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'First of the speaking' (should be 'First of all, speaking') and missing articles or punctuation issues (e.g., 'In conclusion I agree'). Despite these slips, the meaning is never obscured, and the errors do not impede communication. The student shows a good grasp of basic grammar, but more consistent control over complex sentence structures and punctuation would be required for a higher band score.
