Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely agreed that living in a country where we need to learn and speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems and also practical problems.

I completely accept with the fact on practical difficulties living in a country where we need to learn and speak a foreign language specially we have never attempted learning a new language from past. Some of the practical problems with learning a new language is firstly it will take 6 months to an year to understand the basics of any language as it is a time consuming process. Initial days of communication with people around is a cumbersome process. Another major issue is, as we grow older the ability to grasp any new concept or language is becoming difficult compared to younger generation. Also with current busy life style allocating time to learning new things is again a challenge. Some of the social problems are misinterpretation or poor choice of words will always put us in embarrassing situations. I have personally experienced it when I was trying to speak with a bar attender in french she misunderstood my pronunciation from guess to kiss. She started reacting and complaining about me to her manager. Which made me feel uncomfortable. Likewise we have multiple similar experience specially when words can be misinterpreted when it is misspelled.

Hereby, being an aged person I conclude that we have some serious social and practical problems specially living in an countries where we need to learn speak a foreign language.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both social and practical problems. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide a personal anecdote about a language misunderstanding, the argument regarding practical problems is repetitive, focusing heavily on the difficulty of learning a language rather than the broader implications of living in a foreign country. The position is clear, but the essay lacks a more comprehensive exploration of the 'social' aspect beyond a single anecdote. To improve, ensure each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-supported point that directly relates to the prompt's focus on living in a foreign environment.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into three paragraphs, but the structure is quite basic. While there is a logical progression from practical to social issues, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical (e.g., 'Some of the...', 'Another major issue is...', 'Also...'). The transition between the introduction and the body is abrupt, and the conclusion is a bit repetitive, merely restating the prompt rather than synthesizing the main points. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'cumbersome' and 'misinterpretation', but there are also instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'bar attender' (instead of bartender) and 'from past' (instead of 'in the past'). The repetition of basic structures and vocabulary limits the score. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and topic-specific vocabulary related to language acquisition and social integration, while ensuring that words are used in their correct context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'I completely accept with the fact on practical difficulties' (should be 'I agree with the fact regarding...'), 'an year' (should be 'a year'), and 'living in an countries' (should be 'living in countries'). Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are inconsistent. While the meaning is generally clear, these errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic article usage, pluralization, and correct prepositional phrases to improve accuracy.
