Student answer (Band 6.0)

The question of whether speak a foreign language has become a significant topic of discussion in recent years. Although opinions are divided, I firmly believe that speak a non-native language in a country where you live can create a serious social and professional issues, mainly due to its impact on making new friends and lack of job opportunities.

First, for a non-native person it's really hard to make new friends because people often communicate in foreign language, and you do not understand their communication and purpose of chatting. This can lead to person mental health problem such as social isolation and stress. For example, a country like Germany, where thousands of Asian people go for higher education but they do not understand German language. They feel hesitate to join any social community or try to makes new friends. Thus, they mostly spend their time at home and involves in health problem like loneliness and depression.

In addition, lack of job opportunity further strengthens this argument because human interaction is become essential during interview and job life especially in sales job. Consequently, if people do not speak or understand interviewer language, it really hard to get a job, as a result they face rejections. This can be seen in China in 2010, where non-native people completed their master, and then came back to their country, because they did not get job opportunity due to language barrier. Thus, they face practical life problem.

To sum up, I firmly believe that living in a place where non-native language is compulsory can create a enormous social as well as practical issues is justified due to lack of job opportunities and building a new social connection.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses the prompt by discussing both social and practical problems associated with living in a foreign-language environment. The position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the examples provided (Germany and China) are relevant, they are described in a simplistic manner and lack depth. The argument regarding job opportunities is logical but could be expanded with more nuanced analysis. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with more sophisticated reasoning rather than relying on brief, anecdotal-style examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First', 'In addition', 'Consequently', and 'To sum up', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by grammatical errors. Referencing is generally clear, though the connection between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is frequent repetition of basic terms like 'problem', 'job', and 'language'. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'human interaction is become essential' or 'feel hesitate'. While the meaning is always clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions. To improve, focus on using more precise synonyms and collocations related to the topic of migration and language acquisition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('human interaction is become', 'they mostly spend their time... and involves'), article usage ('a person mental health problem'), and verb forms ('whether speak a foreign language'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent and occur in both simple and complex sentences. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and sentence construction is necessary to achieve a higher band.
