Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both social and practical problems associated with living in a foreign country. The position is clear throughout, and the student provides relevant examples, such as the scenario of moving to China. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding the necessity of learning languages is well-supported, but some points, such as the claim that one cannot survive for more than two days without linguistic skills, are over-generalized and lack nuance. The essay covers all parts of the task, but the depth of analysis could be improved to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'Furthermore', 'In a nutshell', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The progression of ideas is generally clear, although the connection between the second paragraph's focus on 'social problems' and the third paragraph's shift to 'mastering languages' could be smoother. Overall, the information is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. There is an attempt to use less common items like 'fathom', 'conundrums', 'panache', and 'pivotal'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'get the ideas of other citizens' (understand others) and 'get occupation' (find employment). Some phrases are used incorrectly, such as 'bury themselves in the sand', which does not fit the context of language learning. These errors do not impede communication, but they limit the precision of the argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the student attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' language), prepositions, and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the concept of others would be unfathomable for him'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some awkward comma placements, such as 'in a way that; this skill'. Despite these errors, the meaning is consistently clear, and the errors do not cause significant difficulty for the reader.
