Student answer (Band 7.5)

Living in a country where people are required to communicate in a foreign language can create both social and practical difficulties. I largely agree with this statement, although learning a foreign language can also provide several important benefits.

One major social problem is that language barriers can make it difficult for immigrants to communicate with local people. People who are not fluent in the local language may struggle to make friends, participate in community activities, or understand cultural norms. As a result, they may feel isolated from society. For example, newcomers who cannot communicate confidently may prefer to interact only with people from their own country, which can reduce their opportunities to integrate into the local community.

There are also several practical problems associated with language difficulties. Everyday activities such as visiting a doctor, dealing with government offices, using public transport, or finding employment can become challenging when a person cannot understand the local language properly. In some cases, misunderstandings can have serious consequences. For instance, a foreign worker may misunderstand instructions at work, potentially leading to mistakes or delays. Similarly, someone who cannot explain their symptoms clearly to a doctor may not receive appropriate assistance.

However, learning the local language can significantly reduce these problems. It enables immigrants to communicate more effectively and understand the culture and customs of their new country. Furthermore, being bilingual can improve employment opportunities and help people develop relationships with individuals from different backgrounds.

In conclusion, I agree that having to speak a foreign language can initially cause considerable social and practical problems. Nevertheless, these difficulties can be reduced substantially when people receive proper language education and make an effort to communicate with the local community.

The ideas are well-developed and logically extended, meeting the requirements for a high band score by providing a comprehensive answer to the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the social and practical problems is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'As a result', 'For instance', and 'Furthermore', which help guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The flow is natural, and the relationship between sentences is clear, ensuring that the reader can easily follow your line of reasoning from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'language barriers', 'cultural norms', 'integrate into the local community', and 'receive appropriate assistance' are used accurately and in the correct context. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it could be elevated further by incorporating more sophisticated or less common collocations to reach the highest band. However, the current level is precise, and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication or cause confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good command of grammatical structures. You successfully use a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the conditional structure in 'if a person cannot understand...' and the use of participial phrases. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is accurate throughout. There is a high level of control over complex forms, and the few minor slips that might occur do not detract from the overall clarity of your writing. The grammatical accuracy is consistent and supports the professional tone of the essay.
